The only place I’ve considered so far in the fort is the commons. It seems to be the nicest for the price

Yeah the Commons is pretty decent. All depends on budget. If you can make the Flats work across the river, that's going to be really nice.

What about out near the pleasant ridge area?
Looks to be about a 20 min drive using google maps. How’s that area and traffic going east towards campus

If you don't do the commons in Ft Sanders, look at something in the area where I posted that zillow link.
As for traffic, we have god-awful traffic in both directions typically around 8am and again at 5pm. Other than that the only traffic you'll encounter is the stuff you see on campus which is never too bad.

Congrats, dude. The ladies in the Veterans Affairs/Fin aid office are fricking awesome...assuming they're still there. UT really does a good job supporting veterans.
Jmo but you prob won't be able to afford downtown on your BAH. I lived in Old North/4th and Gill and that was perfect. Quiet, but close to downtown when you want to get fricked up. Some affordable places there...just have to keep looking.

I was at UT from 2011-2015. I lived in the fort on laurel ave Junior and Senior year and loved it. Never once felt threatened in that neighborhood. Granted I had a great group of people I lived with, but I highly recommend the fort if you want to be involved more in the undergrad social scene. If you are not trying to be in that environment, lots of places right near campus that are decent. The fort to me was just a neighborhood of 20-23 year old college kids chilling and taking it easy. I always thought the reputation out there was totally overblown after living there 2 years. It’s definitely not for everyone, and every now and then something awful happens like in any city(one of the most brutal murders in Tennessee state history happened in that neighborhood to 2 UT students 12 years ago) but I don’t believe the fort is a dangerous ghetto at all like it’s reputation amongst UT students and alumni past and present would have you believe. UT is a big school, many students and alumni who never actually lived there have been spewing ignorance and stereotypes about the Fort for generations, it’s a UT thing. Nothing was better than the vibe of that neighborhood when you and all your other neighbors were hanging out and boozing on beautiful day in the fort when you had free time. Made a lot of great friends and memories in General Fort Sanders Neighborhood. I felt like I was a member of a real community there. Was perfect location for that point in my life, plus I only had to fill up my gas tank like 6 times a year. I could walk just about everywhere I needed. Just my experience and opinion

I have nothing against the Fort, and lived right beside it in Vol Hall during my years at UT. Just meant that some areas are better than others in there, and to just do your research.

I love the Fort. Obviously if i were a female i'd probably feel much different but i never had any problems walking alone, late night, etc
worst thing i saw was a few fraternity brothers playing Poo Dollar

Orientation is in April for me and I’ll be apartment hunting during that time.
7 days after that I get my DD-214

Update I’ll be in Knoxville next weekend for orientation and the spring game

I'm late to seeing this but congrats Fiddlehead. I think you'll like it at UT. It's a pretty laid back campus all the way around. Try not to party too much and you'll have both fun and a piece of paper when you get out.

Knoxville is a great town
Congrats and good luck

I’ll be leaving the Marine Corps in April after five years and LSU did not attempt to work with me since my high school grades weren’t the best and I didn’t have enough transfer credits to meet the requirements.
Life is about adventure and experiences. The fact that you are headed to Tennessee means you are supposed to be going to Tennessee.
I did my UG at LSU, my second degree at DLI (USAF) and my doctorate in SC. Born and raised in BR and lifelong LSU fan. But the best school memories I have are away from “back home”.
Enjoy!

Gratz! Welcome! And as a Navy Vet thank you for your service!
I got accepted but with my father in the Army and in MO the out of state tuition was too much so I went to Mizzou for a year, ended up dropping out then finishing my degree with the U of Maryland while in the Navy. We all have strange paths.

Hey Fiddlehead,
I was sifting through old threads and found this one. I'm a current student as well. Been here since 2015. How are you liking UT?
