That's because people are absolutely nuts when it comes to expectations on these guys. Sexton is being talked about as the #1 PG taken in the draft and we have people bashing him every game too.
I thought Petty would be very close to as good as Sexton before the season started. But, that's only because I thought he'd be a little more consistent than he has been and Sexton might struggle a little more often than he has.
Petty is going to be fine. He helps the team even when he isn't making shots by making the other team respect the 3 pt line. He's also a very good passer. He was excellent at getting to the rim in high school (at least on his highlight videos) and I expect him to continue to improve in that area at Bama.
He hustles and seems like he cares. I expect him to be a star before he's done.
As far as his road woes, it's all in his head. Shooting is like golf.

Depth perception! Going into different places that you aren't used to and they are more cavernous than even Coleman and most all HS gyms, it throws your depth perception off and you misjudge distances. Watch the Final 4 in B'ham next week and even some of the Regional games from this past week. They go from playing in HS gyms to the small college gyms and struggle. Then move on to Legacy Arena and struggle. It's that and simply put, a lack of confidence!

Petty is going to have to learn to be able to drive and score. He either shoots the 3, or he drives and passes. He has got to learn to take it to the hoop, or drive and pull up in the lane for a short jumper. Teams have the blue print on him. Take away the 3 and he cant hurt you.

Its seems to be somewhat common for young players, especially jump shooters in unfamiliar gyms who don't get close in looks. Elite guys are able translate better and he ill hopefully improve in that aspect with experience.

This, maybe because we haven't had a lot of these highly rated guys lately, but expectations were crazy high.

I'd really wish we started getting him some open shots in the paint to start road games. Set a screen and let him pull up for a jumper from 10-12 feet. Michigan State does a good job of this usually and their guys gain more confidence as the game wears on.

a lot of guys just dont' have the mid-range jumper anymore though. Not sure about Petty, but he seems to post up at the three. I saw people talking about how Curry's play seems like it has made a lot of the young guys coming up shoot either 3's or get to the rim and they don't really see a lot of mid-range jump shooters anymore.

I actually think this is probably one of Sexton's strengths, but he doesn't do it much. I'm not sure about Avery, but I've heard some talk of coaches not wanting many mid range shots - either get to the hole or try for 3. Sexton was very good, from what I saw, in high school with the mid range stuff.
And, as far as Petty, when I watched all of his Jemison film, I never got the impression he was "just" a 3 pt shooter. He was scoring from everywhere, including some immpressive dunks. I know it was high school, but I think he can be very capable inside the 3 pt line in college. I do think he needs to keep working on his ball handling though. He's a bit high and wild with it.

Until he can get better on the road, we'd be better with him on the bench. I mean he's ice cold, turns the ball over a bunch, and has no real offensive game outside of launching 3's. That ok if you're hot, if you're cold---that's a lot of dead weight for the rest of the team to carry. Play him at home, bench him on the road until something changes.

It's not just his shooting. You expect droughts. It's turnovers and rebounding for me. I'm sorry if the kid has a lot going on, we need to get him all of the help we can.

And as a side note, I can't figure out why Key plays so much. That dude is a turnover machine and offers very little to offset his negatives.

Key has been playing good as of late.

You've now decided Key and Petty shouldn't play on the road.
Who exactly do you want to play?

In all seriousness, the inconsistency of these 3 guys has been at the heart of this roller-coaster season we're having. Until Avery can figure out how to utilize them within the rotation (may not be possible), we'll keep on going up and down.....notice how poorly each of these guys handle and take care of the ball. Besides Sexton, who can you trust with the ball against good defensive teams?

Agree - which is frustrating, because 2 of the 3 are experienced and should be more consistent.

Petty's lazy passes or lack of effort on defense drive me more crazy than his inability to drive to the hole.

A downvote means you're over the target area...that is where you take heavy flak....

He's young and having confidence issues. He not only struggles to shoot, he makes poor decisions and passes.
Also terrible at boxing out and rebounding. He’s highly highly overrated.
