What did Neil Young say about Alabama?

Let's be honest, whatever he said, Alabama probably deserved it.
Those of us from Scottish decent however, we have no dog in that hunt. We never had the money to be players in the old south, nor would we want to be associated anyway with the moneyed English gentry of the Alabama types.
Gave us all a bad name.
Just below the "nobility" I'm sure they think they are.

Not sure but from what I understand they don’t need him around anyhow.

I’ve also wondered this.

A Southern man doesn't need Neil Young around.
"Southern Man"
Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man
I saw cotton
and I saw black
Tall white mansions
and little shacks.
Southern man
when will you
pay them back?
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?
Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man
Lily Belle,
your hair is golden brown
I've seen your black man
comin' round
Swear by God
I'm gonna cut him down!
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Where did arky finish in recruiting? asking for lynyrd skynyrd...
Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the south-land
I miss 'ole' 'bamy once again and I think it's a sin
Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor, boo-hoo-hoo
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you, tell the truth
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you, here I come
Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've

So Ole Neil was broadbrushing the rest of us with blanket Alabama accusations?

Young later wrote:
"My own song 'Alabama' richly deserved the shot Lynyrd Skynyrd gave me with their great record. I don't like my words when I listen to it. They are accusatory and condescending, not fully thought out, and too easy to misconstrue".

It wasn't just Alabama he was putting down it was the entire South during the civil rights movement. He was basically calling us all a bunch of white supremacist and segregationists. There were and are these kinds of people in the South but it was not and is not the majority of us. He speaks of whips cracking even though there had not been slavery for 100 years. It was a ludicrous song and many Southerners found it insulting.(Lynard Skynard was actually tight with Neal Young and it was meant as light hearted jab at him) Truth be told it was a white man cashing in on the civil rights movement and stereotypes of the South.

You should've heard what he said about Sam Walton.

I like Neil Young. Old Man, Heart of Gold, Keep on Rockin'in the Free World. He had some good ones.
