I like Neil Young. Old Man, Heart of Gold, Keep on Rockin'in the Free World. He had some good ones.
He's a better lyricist than actual musician, imho.

What did Neil Young say about Alabama?

"Southern Man," off "After The Gold Rush," is a wholly different song than "Alabama," which was on "Harvest," a later album. Both were period pieces, referring to a historical era, rather than modern times.

Give 'Ramada Inn' a try. It's off one of his new albums. It's really good after you've had a couple beers and just want to sit back and relax. Of course, I think is about a guy with a dining problem, so there's irony in that.

Yes, Alabama specifically. Two different songs.

“Powderfinger” is my favorite Neil Young song. Offered this song to Skynyrd to record.

Their was another video of the same Powderfinger performance that I linked but I couldn't find it. The video I wanted focused on the entire band and not just Neil. There were also a couple of cuts to the crowd.
I love how ragged and powerful Young and Crazy Horse always were.

Neil Young is a Canadian. he should have worried more about slavery in Canada.
Slavery in Canada includes both that practised by First Nations from earliest times and that under European colonization. The latter was legal until the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. Forms of slavery, such as human trafficking, still occur in Canada.[1]
Slavery was abolished in Canada approx. 30 years before it was here. The salves in Canada largely were brought there from the Untied States, so it's a bit of a stretch for him to criticize the US when his country was using us as middle men for the slave trade in Canada. You gotta love entertainers who criticize others for the same sins they participate in.

by the way, has Neil Young sang anything lately or ever about Canada giving money for weapons to the house of Saud?

I don't think you understand the point of the song. It wasn't to point a finger and say you had slavery and we Canadians did not. It was about the continued oppression.

Those of us from Scottish decent however, we have no dog in that hunt.
fricking dumb arse. Alabama has a lot of Scottish descent hence the state flag.
I only care about what Lynyrd Skynyrd said about Pinko Canadian Neil Young. "A man don't need him around anyhow."

Southern Man was much more damning or condemnatory than the song Alabama. The latter ends with a sort of amiable plea
Oh, Alabama
Can I see you and shake your hand?
Make friends down in Alabama
I'm from a new land
I come to you and see all this ruin
What are you doing, Alabama?
You got the rest of the Union
To help you along
What's going wrong?
In any event, Neil Young was absolutely right in his observations in the songs Southern Man and Alabama. Too many people in the South, including govt officials and law enforcement, were negligent in defending the civil rights of blacks and, in fact, those who could and should have defended those people were too often the most damnable oppressors. It was time for a change, and crazy as it seems now, music was one of the things that helped, at least a little, to bring about that change, or I should say that the message conveyed in the songs helped bring a change.
Neil Young is probably one of the 3 best songwriters ever in popular music. You have Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Young, among others that are worthy of consideration. A great songwriter, regardless where anybody would rank him.
