I assume the coach looked for a spot in the NFL 1st and once that didn't work agreed to be the Man for Nick. Nick took his time before making the call and the reson might just be his top selections were looking for a gig in the NFL.

Kool

Bc naming a coach after a cigarette period seems lame, especially one that was popular in the 70s and 80s and tries itself to be cool by playing on words/spelling in such a lame way

(Full disclosure - I’m not a smoker and never have been, but my dad was and he smoked kool)

ETA: apparently the coach calls himself Coach Kool, so nevermind. If that’s what he wants to be called then that’s what we will call him I guess. Still think it’s lame, but he will make our D-line so much better, so I’m down.

He was probably nicknamed by his players.

Looks like a good hire, though him having a reputation as a "meh" recruiter on the heels of Dunbar doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Wasn't the rumor that Pennuzio (sp?) would be moved to off-field and we'd hire a new coach in his place? Is that still happening? If so, we'd be in the hunt for one more coach, no? I'd love to go steal one of Kirby's best recruiters just to send a message to our chubby old friend.

The great assistant coach swap of 2018 can now officially be labeled a mother fvckin success.

All hail Saban

You'd think by now our fans would have learned to stop doubting the man.

But no, you can take it to the bank that as soon as there's a rumor of a hiccup there will be another mass panic.

Like I said before, Craig Kuligowski will be fine at Alabama because all he needs to do is show that he can coach the DL up. If he can get the Sack category to be in Top 10 this fall, That sells itself for DL prospects. With his reputation, and 5 star talents he has on Alabama, he should not have any issues getting some commits. He should be a better recruiter by the time he leaves Alabama.

Recruiting thread post by UAgrad93:

Kug recruited some pretty good talent to South Beach, including 5 rated 4* with the 54th, 64th, 71st and 74th overall player in the 247 composite rankings in their respective classes. He was listed 7th best recruiter in the ACC in 2017.

Kuligowski will have no problem recruiting top DLs to Alabama. Pannunzio coached STs & TEs and is moving to an off-field position. Jeff Banks is the new STs coach. Banks or Locks will likely coach TEs, since Enos will coach QBs. Bama now has its full staff of 10 on-field assistants.

Bottom line: Coach Saban has done a great job of revamping the staff.

We good to go.

Social media praises Alabama’s reported hiring of defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski

Nick Saban appears to have hit a home run with the hiring of his new defensive line coach.
quote:

Alabama and Nick Saban have had to make a number of different staff changes this offseason. But it appears that they may have just made one of the best hires of the offseason in the reported hiring of Craig Kuligowski to coach the defensive line. Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated first reported the news of Kuligowski’s hiring.

Kuligowski is arguably the top defensive line coach in the country given his time at Miami, were he spent the past two seasons, and Missouri, where he was a coach from 2001-15. Miami led the nation in sacks last season, and with Missouri he developed a number of great defensive linemen such as Shane Ray, Kony Ealy, Michael Sam, Markus Golden and Sheldon Richardson. And now he will be set to work with some of the top defensive linemen in the country, like Raekwon Davis and 5-star freshman Eyabi Anoma.

After news of the reported hire came out on Twitter, many came to praise the hire as Kuligowski is widely recgonized as one of the best in the business.

Booger @ESPNBooger
If u need a dline coach ... I’d hire him in heartbeat.

Travis Haney @travhaney
Well that just isn’t fair.

Patrick Brown @pbrown247
Saban wins again.

Cole Cubelic @colecubelic
Not that Bama needs it would be it’s a MASSIVE hire. He’s an amazing coach...one of the best in college football. That group will improve rapidly.

Seth Emerson @SethWEmerson
Bad for Mark Richt, good for Nick Saban, bad for the rest of the SEC.

Chris Vannini @ChrisVannini
Craig Kuligowski is arguably the best DL coach in the country. Huge loss for Miami.

Kuligowski will replace Karl Dunbar on the Alabama staff, as he left to take a job with the Pittsburgh Steelers after National Signing Day. He’s one of the many new assistants on the Alabama staff, specifically on the defensive side of the ball. Jeremy Pruitt left to become the coach at Tennessee, while defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley left to join the Oakland Raiders staff.

Tosh Lupoi, who was the outside linebackers coach last year, will be the defensive coordinator, while Karl Scott will coach the defensive backs. Alabama also added UTSA defensive coordinator Pete Golding to the staff as well. Alabama also had to replace offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who left to become the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. He was replaced by Mike Locksley and former Penn State wide receiver’s coach Josh Gattis was added to the staff.

Alabama won the national title last season, defeating Georgia 26-23. The defensive line played a pivotal role in that game, as it pressured Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm for the majority of the night. The Crimson Tide open the 2018 season against Louisville on September 1 in Orlando.

I'm not sure who on the board has spoken negatively of the hire. Pretty much all I've seen is the question about his recruiting ability...a perfectly reasonable question regarding a hire one is not familiar with. Hell, one of the major replies you see from recruits when asked what was/is important to them in selecting a school is about the relationship with their position coach. Nobody's said he was a poor recruiter (like Dunbar), nor have they questioned Saban's choice. Only a fool would claim to know more about recruiting than Saban.

The one who spoke negative about his recruiting were from fans. We never heard anything negative about his recruiting or coaching from professionals within coaching industry.

Nobody's spoken badly about this hire. It is a fantastic hire, which is my point.

Bama hires Lane Kiffin as OC. OMG ALL OUR PET'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF! SABAN IS LOSING IT! What happens? Three straight SEC titles, playoff appearances, and a national title.

Lost Kiffin as OC, lost a NC on the last play. OMG ALL OUR PET'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF! SABAN IS LOSING IT! What happens? Bama wins the national title the next year.

Had 7 straight #1 classes, dropped to #5 for a season. OMG ALL OUR PET'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF! SABAN IS LOSING IT! What happens? Saban makes a series of great recruiting hires.

Lose Dunbar to the NFL late in the recruiting & hiring cycle in a year where DL is a question mark. OMG ALL OUR PET'S HEADS ARE FALLING OFF! SABAN IS LOSING IT! What happens? Saban hires a guy considered to be one of the best DL coaches in college football.

He does these things all the time, but whenever something perceived as negative happens a big chunk of our fanbase loses their shait. I just can't understand why they don't just sit back and enjoy the ride content in the knowledge that Saban knows what the frick he's doing.

Was coming here to post that.

Was fired as an OC at Virginia. Became an Alabama GA. Promoted to WRs coach. And now he’s an OC for the super bowl champs.

And yet I maintain his greatest achievement of all remains Melissa Stark when they were in college.
