This will obviously be different for all of us. I'm trying to rank it based on their impact, instrumental talent, showmanship, and vocal talent. Obviously some will disagree. This isn't my favorite all time necessarily, but just the ones I would put in the top ten. See how you guys rank yours. I'm sure we will agree on some and disagree on others.
1. Freddy Mercury - Feel this should be Universal. Vocal range is incredible, impact is outstanding, and his showmanship is really second to none. Clear number 1 to me.
2. Jimi Hendrix - Best guitarist ever. Incredible showman. His vocal talent not quite as high as others, but he absolutely makes up for it in impact and guitar skills. Died too young, he could have ended up number 1.
3. Mick Jagger - He has to be high. He is the face and being of the Rolling Stones, music's longest going rock band. The Stones and the Who changed live shows. His unique sound while not technically amazing like Mercury, is still incredible. It's like Dylan. Unique and identifiable immediately.
4. Paul McCartney - Impact - high. Showmanship isn't quite as flashy, but was never meant to be. His music stands the test of time. Was the leader of the most popular band in history. The Beatles move to psychedelic really changed how the mass viewed music, even if they weren't the pioneers of it. His vocal range is strong. He also plays instruments far better than most seem to realize. He can drum and bass guitar with the best of them. As well as play the Piano quite well.
5. Robert Plant - Considered by many one of the best vocalist in rock history. Yes they stole some songs, but it doesn't change his incredible vocal range, one stage performances, and impact in rock music. Certified legend.
6. Jim Morrison - Another man who died far to young. His deep, insanely soothing voice will always be remembered. His live shows entertained, even if it meant collapsing on stage too drunk to perform.
7. Bruce Springsteen - Not a massive fan of his music overall. His showmanship is second to Mercury though. Three hour shows, music everyone has heard. He mixed so many genre's together. Still 60 and going strong. Man is amazing and a legend.
8. Bono - Vocals. Showmanship. Impact. All checks. Maybe rating him to low to be honest. Saw him live..it's incredible.
9. Kurt Cobain - If I had to pick a grunge vocalist from personal preference it would be Cornell. His impact though, was nothing near Cobain. He had the look, the sound, the guitar talent, and the showmanship. He was the major push for the Seattle grunge scene. Some like to attack Nirvana as being the "pop" grunge band. I call bullshite. In Utero and Nevermind are just about as perfect a grunge album as you can create.
10. Bob Dylan - His music has changed minds on how we treat people. His unique, passionate but not traditional sound is instantly recognizable. May be the best song writer in rock history. Also good instrument talent on guitar and harmonica.
Close to my top ten - Chris Cornell, Eddie Vadder, Axl Rose, Roger Daltrey, Ozzy, Brian Johnson, Roger Waters

Can’t stand Freddy Mercury / Queen. They are always at the top of every list on rock but I disagree, same with Rush. I’ll try to think of my list later but I agree with a lot of yours.

Sting
Dave Matthew’s
If I had to add an honorable mention, it would be Patrick Monahan from Train, one of the few modern bands I like.
The Eagles are my favorite band, but since Don Henley and Glenn Frey split Frontman duties, they can’t be on here.

I also think Mick Jagger should be either 1 or 2

Probably not too 10 but John Fogerty is somewhere near the top. With or without Credence, he had an impact. Great songwriter, guitarist.

You're absolutely right on #1. Nobody could hold an audience in the palm of his hand like Freddie Mercury.
I have to disagree with this one. Solid voice. Zero instrumental talent, though, and generally a terrible showman even when sober.

Where is Kidd Rock on everybody's list? I got him at like #6

He is forgotten now a days but David Lee Roth used to be a great front man for Van Halen. Decent voice and tremendous showman.
Robin Zander has been great as a front man for Cheap Trick. They are one of those bands that just sounds much better in person then they do on a recording.
I wouldn't put Kid Rock in the front man for a band slot. He was the star act and had a band to back him up. While obviously a vaster bigger star the same could be said for Elvis. I'd be inclined to put Bob Dylan in the not so much a front man for a band as the star act with a band backing him up.
Buddy Holly probably would have been one of the all time great frontmen if he had not died in that plane crash. At just 22 years of age and with a love of musical experimentation he could have been a musical force throughout the 60's and possibly into the 70's.
