I just posted this in another thread, but it’s relevant here too: Texas A&M has a different history than most of the big-time schools. “So much” isn’t an accurate description. At present we’re trying to do something that few programs have done: overhaul the entire gig from top to bottom (new conference, new AD, new facilities, new coaches).

I honestly had no idea so many of you expected us to waltz into the SEC and immediately start winning championships. I guess we should be flattered.

When I used the phrase "so much" I guess I was mainly referring to your amazing alumni base, which has given you an unlimited ability to write as many checks for whatever reason you want, facilities, coaches, etc... Texas may be the only program that can rival your alumni power. Your financial capabilities give you endless options, including the ability to pay an assistant coach head coach type money.

That alumni base is actually relatively new—we just happen to be hard core.
The percentage of Former Students at Texas A&M grew substantially in the late 80s and 90s.
But I won’t bore y’all with that history.

I've posted this before, but will repeat it here.

Until about 1970, A&M was basically the Citadel or VMI, though a bit bigger and wealthier. Until then, you had to convince kids to come to a small-ish school in a small town, live a military life on a campus with no women, and do it 90 miles from your biggest rival, a school with effectively unlimited funds and scholarships and who was riding the most success stretch in their history. Post-WWII, college football was no longer something where small schools could compete with big state schools (especially with the other headwinds mentioned above).

After 1970, A&M began to compete on a level playing field. Corps was voluntary, women were on campus, and scholarship limits meant schools like Texas could no longer corner the talent market. Since 1974, A&M & Texas have split their series, as have A&M and Arky. Did not look up LSU. Fewer data points and more streaks.

Since then, we have had some really good stretches (Bellard, Sherrill, early Slocum), followed by one disaster (Fran), one sleepy coach (Sherman), and Sumlin. All schools have these stretches.

So, to say A&M has always had these resources and opportunities and has squandered them is just not the full story.

Auburn. They beat Alabama and UGA and couldn't even make the playoffs.

I'm not convinced aggy is going to be able to out bama bama, which is what Jimbo will try to do, they would have been better off hiring McCoy from Houston.
