A voice of reason in a mob of nega-Bammers. Jalen has limitations...but not as many as some of the posters here.

Yep...and in the '92 season, we passed for 18 yards (Barker was 4-13 with 2 INTs)...and won by 21...

It's always been our identity to win with dominant defense and conservative offense.

Are we a conservative offense or are we just inefficient?

Ala has won 5 titles with their QB passing for under 100 yards in the championship game. We got this!
That's amazing.
'61 Trammel (20)
'78 Rutledge (91)
'79 Shealy (70)
'92 Barker (18)
'09 GMc (58)
Jalen should fit right in with this group.

Serious question, since I didn't play football at a higher level. When the offense is over the ball and making their checks, and getting all of the blocking straight, who's responsibility is it to recognize a blitz and adjust the blocking scheme to handle it? I assume its on the QB, but just want to confirm that its not the center. I've always assumed that some of the lines problem in pass pro is that the blitz isn't being identified prior to the snap so no adjustment is being made. But again, I'm far from an expert.
Just from my experience and that isn't vast or anything. It can be a combination of the QB and the center. Sometimes the back will point something out or mention it in the ear as he has a block assignment as well. I think Jalen has actually improved in this regard and Bradley is pretty seasoned. I think jail breaks happened a lot more earlier in the year.

I get the feeling towards Hurts because he just isn’t a good passer, but some of y’all can tone down the vitriol a tad bit. I mean the kid is still one of our players haha.
So is our kicker.
Is criticism of him off limits now also?

Never said the criticism wasn't warranted. There's a difference between saying a player isn't playing to the standard we want, and basically wanting the kid thrown out in the trash.

True.
There's also a difference between saying one kid should be given some playing time and saying the other kid should be "thrown out with the trash".

Absolutely agree. I've openly said I want Tua to be the starter eventually, and leading up to the game I fully believed he would play in the Sugar Bowl (I didn't foresee our Defense dominating the game like they did).
Some folks around here are just taking that train of thought to the next level and it almost seems like hatred towards our QB.

I don’t have hatred towards Jalen. However I just believe his limitations are holding the offense, therefore the team, back. We were dominating Clemson yet it was still 10-6 almost midway through the 3rd Quarter because our offense couldn’t do anything.
I believe we will win Monday but our scoring ceiling is so low against good defenses that it’s going to give our defense a smaller margin of error.

Again, I agree with you 100%.
I just think if our defense holds the other team's offense in check that Saban isn't going to pull Jalen out of the game. It does suck having to hang on to the edge of our seats because our offense struggles so much versus good defenses.
Just a thought here, but if you believe what multiple beat writers said and what Boz said on this board that the staff had a plan for Tua to play in the game then maybe the staff sees the same things we do. Just didn't need to happen Monday night because our Defense got a turnover at the perfect moment in the game.

Also, just to play contrarian here, but maybe Coach Saban thinks that Tua might put our defense in bad situations by not taking care of the ball.

That could be the case and I’m not sitting here saying we should put Tua in.
However Jalen did just that with his fumble against Clemson. But if we’re worried about 1 or 2 INTs, I’d submit that our inability to stay on the field is just as risky.

Yea, Jalen panicked when he saw a Clemson player sitting there in the hole about to destroy Damien Harris, but he should know better than to try and pull the ball that late.
And I agree with you that interceptions versus not converting 3rd downs (staying on the field) are comparable, but maybe Saban believes the former is worse than the latter.
We did seem to do a little better job on 3rd downs during the Clemson game (3 three and outs).

Ask Clemson fans their opinions on 3 and outs vs. interceptions after Monday night. Jalen has been protecting the ball very well this year, one of his best attributes.

I see both sides of the argument. After watching the coaches film room for the Sugar Bowl and hearing every single coach praise him over and over for taking care of the ball and making good decisions it made me realize why he is the starter still (among other reasons like Tua being a true Freshman).

I was a walk on QB at UA back when Homer Smith was calling the offense. He put A LOT of this on the QB. But it is the communication between the QB and Center that is so important. QB also must get it to the RB and/or TE to insert them into the protection (slide left/right insert RB to pick up inside blitzer) or release them into the route.
Let me tell you, the playbook Coach Smith had was somewhere around 150-200 pages thick and the QB had to know every last word of it!!!

Cardinal sin when reading the option!! I coached QBs in HS for 13 years and I always preached to them and to the back if we were running any type of read play, RB you have a loose clamp on it until you hit that front leg of the QB, once you get there, clamp down and take it and the QB if he doesn't let go. QB, get the ball back deep to the RB path and ride him up to your front foot, if you haven't decided by then, the RB is taking it!!
