Could a RB throw the ball away like a QB?

Let’s say a RB takes a handoff on a play designed to go around the end and he quickly realizes the defense has leverage and that he is going to get tackled for a 5 yd loss; could he just throw the ball out of bounds once he’s clear of the tackle box?

Theoretically, yes, but if it’s a designed run play - chances are there are linemen downfield.

I don't see how that would be any different unless there's a specific rule against it.

Great point.

He could, but it would be called Intentional Grounding if he didn't throw to an eligible receiver.

Only the player that receives the snap can throw the ball out of bounds.

Still need to be behind LOS.

If passed LOS, then the play wouldn't count and player would look like an idiot.

Ok...I guess that’s the catch.

Yes I’ve seen it several times on reverse or end around RPO’s. Technically not RBs but WRs in that case.

QB hands off to WR on end around, QB runs a route the other way, WR turns and throws to the QB if he’s open, runs if he’s not open, and throws it away if there’s nothing.

Usually something like that.

It seems like a good way to stay out of negative yardage. Wonder why it’s not employed more?

Wow, this is the only guy that knows the actual rule and he's getting downvoted. only the person who received the snap can throw it out of bounds w/ no receiver.

There have been two good reasons posted in this thread.

Ineligible receivers downfield has been mentioned

If he downs the ball behind the line of scrimmage, the linemen downfield wouldn't matter, but he would have to put it really close to an eligible receiver to get away with that since part of not intentional grounding is 1)outside the pocket and 2) ball goes past the line unless at/near an eligible receiver

I haven't seen a linemen downfield on a run play in years.

Ok that's technically not true because Trey Smith did it all year but the past several years of OL hell have made it feel that way and that includes everyone on this season's line BUT Trey.

Gus asks what difference does it make if it's a run or a pass?

The play would count, but it would be an illegal forward pass. 5 yard penalty from the spot and loss of down. Player would still look like an idiot.
