Tweet In the wake of the disastrous fall out from athletic director John Currie and prominent booster Jimmy Haslam’s ill fated attempt to force Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano on to an unwilling Tennessee fan base, momentum is building for prominent boosters and former players to end this cavalcade of absurdity and install a coach with prominent Tennessee football connections back at the helm of the Volunteer program.
Those searches are leading to David Cutcliffe, the current coach at Duke and long time Tennessee assistant, being pursued to return to Tennessee and potentially bring with him current USC offensive coordinator and former Vol quarterback Tee Martin as coach in waiting as well as Kevin Steele, the current Auburn defensive coordinator who played and coached at Tennessee.

Can't believe Steele would want to jump into that mess considering he could stay at AU as long as he wants.

Hes not going to leave to become head coach at UT. Not happening. Hes up in age wants to stay here.

Kevin Steele is a bit old to be jumping into that shite storm at UT. I would think he would stay at Auburn and collect a major raise this year and probably the Broyles award.

Agreed, but that's not what the article is suggesting.

Why would Steele leave Auburn for another DC job? No way, no how...

I see. Well still feel like its not worth the move.

What a fricking shitshow that is.
Why I wasn't sold on running Gus out the door...look at what happened with lsu and tenn.

Not happening his family lives in Auburn and that state retirement plan is a big deal

How many more years does he need? I feel like he either gets it this year or next?

I find it ridiculously hard to believe that Steele wouldn't jump at being the HC of Tennessee. Even if he fails, he would earn enough money to make it worth it
No way he leaves AU for anything other than a major HC job though.

Tennessee will bring home Tee Martin before even thinking of Steele.

The article isn't saying it's to be HC, it said that it's to be DC. It would be the retard move to end retard moves to leave all this talent to go jump into that dumpster fire. If I were a coach, UT would be one of the few blue bloods I would probably not consider going to. They are letting the college football Lavar Ball run their program for fricks sake

Can we just appreciate what that we get to experience the success side of the coaching carousel this round.

I believe the article is saying they will bring in Cutcliffe with Tee Matin as a HC in waiting and call home Steele to take the DC position.
Eta: I myself probably wouldn't jump into a dumpster fire like TN but as an alumni and people calling Steele to come help your school, I could see the draw of receiving miney and praise should you return the team to prominence.

Hear, hear! I'm so glad we aren't going through that gut-churning mess right now.

Playing devil’s advocate here, Steele has a lengthy track record of moving.
80-82 Tennessee
83 New Mexico State
84-86 OK State
87-88 Tennessee
89-94 Nebraska
95-98 Panthers
99-02 Baylor
03-06 FSU
07-08 Bama
09-11 Clemson
13-14 Bama
15 LSU
16-17 Auburn
I think part of this is indicative of being a college football coach. But it’s certainly interesting. Several promotions, several lateral moves too. Let go a few times.
Who knows

He has said prior to coming to AU that he has no desire of being a head coach again.

I’d lean toward betting he stays here until retirement/Gus leaves/fired/north korea, etc.

I guess it also depends on how long he wants to keep coaching. He's gonna be 60 soon and may be looking to retire within a couple years. If he's wanting to retire I could see him trying to fix Tennessee because it wouldn't really matter if he failed because he would just retire. If he wants to keep coaching for a long time then I don't see how he could leave. He doesn't have anything to prove.
