Ultimately, Auburn hired Gus Malzahn, and one of the factors working against Smart, multiple sources told ESPN, was that Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs wasn't comfortable with Smart being the Auburn head coach and pulling double duty as the Alabama defensive coordinator for the next month.

"The others on the search committee [Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan] were good with it, I think, but I don't think Jay could ever get past the thought of the Auburn coach coaching at Alabama for another month and all that went into that," Smart said. "I get that, and the truth is it worked out the way it was supposed to. My experience is that it usually does."

My confidence level in that happening is very low.

I'm hyped for the game -- JHS is gonna be rocking, I'll be screaming my head off, etc. -- but I don't see this coaching staff pulling the big one.

Meh. He’s a better fit at UGA.

Personally, I was on board with hiring Smart... even if he would’ve stayed on at Alabama for a few more weeks. Ultimately, that time would be forgotten and no one would give a shite when he started. Smart would’ve hired Pruitt as his DC, and we’d probably have the nastiest defense in America right now.

But maybe smart needed those extra three seasons to improve as a coach... who knows.

I didn't think he was a good fit then and I don't now. A year ago, he was looking like he was way over his head. Maybe he will continue his upward trend and maybe he won't.
I'm certain we wouldn't have the SEC title in 2013 with Kirby as HC.

We would have hired him and the he would have left us for UGA a couple years later.

But that doesnt fit the writer’s narrative....

Meh, Kirby would have bolted for UGA the first chance he got. I have zero problem with not hiring him.

Kirby wanted all access to all of our NCAA information on the Cam stuff and anything else going on. Auburn told him to frick off and that was the end of it.

I remember some Auburn writers saying the same around the time of Auburn and Kirby Smart “falling out.”
