Auburn has a presence with an NC and a runner up that shows we have the talent. If anything a coaches ego will make him think he can go the one step further that Gus cannot. I am more concerned about JJ making a hire than if we can compete with the other schools looking. Honestly the AD hire is more important for the University than HC right now.

As I have said, best case Gus pulls his head out of his arse and makes the next step as a coach. There is no guaranteed winners available that I see. And there is a chance the Frost, Campbell, or Norvell could be the next Saban, but they are not established enough to expect the AD to hand over the keys and know they are done.
If Gus stays stupid, Fuente is very much a leader for me since he has moved up and seems to be handling things. He feels right to step in and be a long term solution.

I hate this idea that you cannot fire a guy because multiple positions are open around you. It's a weak mentality.

Auburn is a top program and should be treated as such.

My feelings are that Auburn must beat Georgia OR Alabama for Gus to keep his job, even that might be hard to do with a new AD coming in soon.

Also, please say no to another ISU head coach. Matt Campbell has done a great job as an underdog but also lost 45-0 to Kansas. Lets see what he can do with another 2 years as a HC.

This program needs a coach that has that killer mentality. When he sees blood, he pounces. Auburn is a top-10 program and should be treated as such. If Gus isn't the guy, which I don't think he is anymore, fire him.

I want Greg Schiano.

"allows us to get boat raced by bama again."

"You can say a lot about Gus, but he has probably played bama as well as anyone over the last 3 years. He torched them in 2014 only to watch an impotent D cost him the game. He limped through 2015 keeping it close until Champ went all Champ on the sideline. In 2016 it never felt like we had a chance, but somehow we hung around with them. His ability to play them with roster deficiencies is reason in my mind to pause and see what it might be like if he can ever develop a roster close to as talented as bama."

29-13 and 30-12 is boat raced no mater how you spin it...

Since when is being smart a "weak mentality?"

Firing Gus is only a good move if we know that we can upgrade. Otherwise we might as well be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

We are a top program, but even top programs strike out in highly competitive hiring years (See LSU/UF)

Auburn is a top-10 program

Based on what exactly?

Even in our best metric, revenue, we barely make it in there at #10 for 2015-16 reported... #5 in the SEC

We are outside the top 10 in

-Wins
-Win%
-Nat'l Champs
-P5 Conf Championships Won
-AP Poll Weeks Ranked
-Bowl Appearances

What does this even mean in a college football coach? This is just more vague quality descriptions people throw out that mean absolutely nothing

I want Greg Schiano.

I'm with you that those aren't games to celebrate, but let's not act like we just got whooped from play 1

- Auburn played backup QBs in both 2015/16 (15': JJ, 16': JF3)
- Auburn lost by less than Bama's avg margin of victory
- 29-13 should be 22-13 but Henry's clock burn ended up with a TD

let's also not act like we were ever in a position to won those games either.

I think I speak for the majority of the posters here when I reiterate that losing to Bama in 2014-16 isn't what makes us question Gustav's coaching ability.

If you knew anything about Rutgers, look at the records before him and after him. Rutgers is a dump and he brought them into the top-10 one year. That alone is impressive to anyone with a brain.

Also, he coached in the NFL because of his experience at Rutgers, and currently coaching under one of the best coaches in NCAA history, who has repeatedly said he never wants him to go because of the impact he's had at OSU.

Honestly...

Current climate of head coaching buyout, a coordinator is likely the only route.

Yeah, why not keep a shitty coach that makes the same mistakes every year. No sense in taking the next up and coming coach from the Saban Tree. Its not like they are very successful.

Its not like Pruitt hasn't won championships at Bama and FSU and all throughout his HS coaching career. Its not like his defenses are good or anything.

Auburn is better than that

I agree with keeping Gus. We are close to competing for Championships every year. Depth is as good as it has been in years. Defense is rock solid. Recruiting is at a high level.

A few hiccups here and there which he is surely learning from. We can't compare us to Alabama. Also, have to ignore our record against Alabama. Nobody is beating them lately. Everybody has losing records against them.

When he brings in his bestie Freeze to be the OC next year, we will see what happens.

I never said Schiano is a fine coach and did well building Rutgers, but to consider him a top coach is absolutely insane.

If he was a top coach, he wouldn't be stuck as a D Coordinator with offers only from South Florida/Directional schools

quote:

Rutgers is a dump and he brought them

The skillset to build a program isn't the same as elevating a top program.

There is a reason Fortune 500 companies don't hire CEOs from the successful small business owners. Successfully leading Auburn requires didn't set of skills/ability than bringing up garbage programs

quote:

brought them into the top-10 one year.

By this logic, we should also phone in Mark Mangino. He was more successful with Kansas against better competition and also finished Top 10 one year

quote:

currently coaching under one of the best coaches in NCAA history, who has repeatedly said he never wants him to go because of the impact he's had

Nick Saban said Houston Nutt should replace him at LSU. Public statements by coaches are meaningless

I think its safe to say this was, in fact, the best bye week Gus has had since being here.

Gus should have had a competent backup QB on the roster that was ready to play.
