Since we are all pretty much conceding this as a certainty in the immediate future, I figured I'd start a thread to keep the conversation/information contained. I'm going to hop off the mega-fan posting for a bit and I hope this thread might serve as something to lurk on every once-in-a-while.
Brent Venables - in my opinion, this seems like the best option right now. Easily one of the better DC's in college football and a great recruiter. If we don't snag him, someone else will and we'll probably regret it.
Dave Aranda
Petersen
Patterson
Franklin
Brohm
Bill Clark
Scott Frost
Lane Kiffin
Chip Kelly

I'd also consider Dave Aranda.

That looks like a good name to put on a list.

Gus will be here in 2018, but have fun.

Seems like there might be some good openings in the SEC this off-season.

Anyone. Don't care. It's not about improving at this point, it's about vengeance.
Gus made Auburn the laughing stock of cfb on every level. Even aubie is getting shite on for the Troy costume. Every team that got upset this weekend is saying "thank God for Gus malzahn."
Just fire him and worry about all that other shite later.

Piss on hiring a Coordinator and hoping he will make a solid HC. Its time we go get a legit gat damn HC. First order of business is getting JJ off campus. He has to go before he has any influence over the next HC hire

I agree he is an excellent option.

Dave Aranda
Not ready to be a HC yet. Or at least hasn't proven enough, imo.

Peterson
I assume you mean Petersen. He ain't leaving Washington.

Patterson
Maybe in 2008, but that ship has sailed. He isn't leaving TCU with all the money they have put into that program in the past number of years. He is one of the few coaches who can say he built a program from scratch.

Franklin
He belongs at Penn St.

Let's go get the anti-Gus, Lane Kiffin.
Excellent recruiter, great offensive mind, hates Nick Saban. I think he would be the perfect guy to bring the swag back to AU and retire Saban like Dye did Bryant.
He's safer than some of coordinator options floating around like Venables or Aranda and I don't like our chances of landing a proven commodity... Look at our last two coaching searches, we ended up with 5-19 Chizik and Gus.

Shoot I'd take Lane Kiffin over Gus, atleast he wouldn't have ran the ball 17 times on 1st down and he would've had the balls to go for it on 4th and 1. Of course there's better options out there, but two days later I see a lot of coaches that would be significantly better than Gus.

At this point Tom Hanks for interim.
At least he'd act like a head coach and JJ could play without a leg to stand on Dan.

Not a bad list, but missing one name that may have some interest from both sides.
Clay Helton... USC Head Coach
After redshirting his freshman year, Helton played college football at Auburn as quarterback. In 1993, Helton transferred to Houston, after his father was hired as head coach there.[1] Helton was a backup quarterback at both Auburn and Houston and graduated from Houston in 1994 with a degree in mathematics and interdisciplinary science.[1][3] At Houston, Helton completed 47 of 87 passes for 420 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions and played 16 games.[4]

Surprised Butch Davis' name hasn't come up.
Established HC with multiple championships.
Track record of developing elite NFL LEVEL players
Could be bought for next to nothing.
Not a lot of competition for his services
IMO only out of a job for so long because of the UNC academic scandal which was recently declared null and void by the NCAA.

I will say this..Whoever has the chance to hire Jeff Brohm and doesn’t do it is making a big mistake. What he is doing at Purdue is remarkable. He almost beat Wisconsin Saturday. They almost beat Louisville and he beat PJ Fleck and Minnesota decisively. That Purdue team was godawful before he got there. Someone will hire him away in 2-3 years and they are going to get a star.

What about Bill O'Brien or Doug Marrone? Maybe Josh McDaniels?

There are a lot of bad candidates listed throughout this thread.
If I'm the AD, and I could do a much better job than the current one, I'm doing everything in my power to bring Bob Stoops to AU. He is a proven, elite head coach who still has several years in front of him.
Otherwise, I'm carefully looking at coordinators who have a lot of experience as a coordinator in major successful programs. I would rather take a shot on a solid coordinator (Venables) than a head coach who is the "hot up and comer" (PJ Fleck). After all, that's how we ended up in our current predicament.
EDIT: My only concern with a coordinator is would he be able to handle all the behind the scenes drama we seem to have at AU. That's why I think you need a proven HC who knows how to navigate AU politics, etc.
