I'm more skeptical of Auburn than most because I don't think bad teams can automatically turn it on and become good with one year of experience, no matter how talented
And make no mistake, Auburn was bad. Outside of Bama the only SEC teams they beat all season were godawful LSU and Missouri. And then they somehow lost to Missouri in the conference tourney.
Maybe they'll be great but I need a little bit of proof first.
Bama had a solid team last year, Auburn games aside.

The thing with Auburn is they've been such a miserable defensive team the last few years and it doesn't seem to change at all. Maybe an extra year of experience together will help, but they just don't ever really seem interested or taught to play good team defense. I'm not sure that is going to get much better.
They will be very talented though.

quote:Because the Hogs got robbed vs the NCAA Champs in the Tourney , we were 3rd in the SEC last year, and we only lose Moses and Dusty. Yes, we have several hot shots coming in, including a few knock-down shooters to replace Dusty and a BADASS big man to replace Moses in Daniel Gafford. Arkansas wont suck at basketball again, not for a very long time. The in state talent is unbelievable. And the Malik Monk's and the KeVaughn Allen's and the Payton Willis' of the state arent leaving the state anymore. So, yeah. Prepare your anuses.
Why do some think Arkansas will be good? Do they have everyone back? Hot shot new freshmen? Just curious because I have not seen them rated highly anywhere. Not that I have been looking either.

so we wont be better with USA standouts OKeke and Wiley

We return more talent than your team. We had kids that couldn't even play the full season because transfer rules too and still managed to beat bama every game. ADD wiley and okeke to that equation and Auburn should be in the top 5 at least in the league.

I don't think we were all that bad. We lost a few close games and had some epic collapses to blow some big leads but outside of Florida, USC, A&M and Purdue we were in a position to win every game at the under 8 mark. Lack of leadership and poor defense cost us at winning time. I think that can be directly attributed to depending on 4 fr and a so. It's the same reason I'm a little less high on Alabama and Mizzou as others. You just don't know how young players are going to react in those situations until they go through them. We are a year older so I'm hoping most of those issues are solved but until they toss it up it's all just speculation.
ETA: What happened in the AU/UA games last year will have 0 effect on this year's teams.

Auburn was 82nd in KenPom and 68th in luck (which is essentially a rating of your record in close games) so I'm not really sure I buy that. I don't deny that Auburn has a lot of offensive talents, but teams as bad defensively as they were are going to be prone to losing leads.
I'd differentiate Bama from Mizzou in that Bama was solid last year and returns most of that team. Dazon Ingram, Braxton Key, and Donta' Hall are all quality SEC players. Them going from a 10-8 SEC team to a 12-6 SEC team isn't a big jump. They just need to not suck in non-conference this year.

auburn and state are both probably being slept on. will be interesting to see if theyve grown up cause the talent is there

Backcourt for UF will be fine, but front court has a lot to prove with the departure of Devin Robinson. Lot of young guys coming in, but that doesn't mean anything yet.
Kentucky is Kentucky.
Arkansas only lost three guys from last year's NCAA squad.
Alabama returns almost everyone and welcomes in 5 star PG Collin Sexton.
Honestly, between Mizzou, UF, and A&M, anyone could be in the 4 spot at this point. Tough to tell since we haven't played a game yet.

Auburn definitely isn't being slept on. I've seen them as high as 5th. They're probably being overrated.
Mississippi State may be being slept on. But they had similar defensive problems and their frontcourt sucks arse.

quote:Kevarrius Hayes (junior), John Egbunu (5th year senior), and even Keith Stone (RS sophomore) aren't really "young guys." Neither is Egor Koulechov (grad transfer who's a guard but averaged like nine rebounds at Rice). Our frontcourt is leagues more experienced than Arkansas' considering they're expecting a true freshman Gafford to be their Kinglsey replacement.

I don't expect any freshman to get big minutes for UF this season. Okauru might get double digit minutes as backup PG. Chase Johnson maybe as 3/4 depth.
It's easier to make an argument for UF over UK than anyone else over UF imo since this is a pretty weak Cal UK team. Maybe A&M if Caldwell hits the ground running at PG.

Do they have everyone back?
Depending on how you want to look at it, 4 starters return. Macon was coming off the bench at the end of the season but was getting more minutes than Hannahs.

Hot shot new freshmen?
Our bigman is highly ranked and some solid guys coming in with him.

It has been fairly up or down regarding them but I think it has much more to do with how deep some expected the league to be.

Hayes and Stone played pretty damn well after Egbunu went down.
And Egbunu will be back late December/early Jan.
I'm not concerned at all about the frontcourt.

quote:All of the above. We replace Moses with a 5 star C and everyone else worth nothing is coming back. People are underrating Arkansas because of the loss of Hannahs, but only the people who didn't actually watch us last year and are making predictions based on the box scores alone. Hannahs padded his numbers shooting the lights out against William and Mary's School for the Blind while simultaneously doing his best Casper impression against any team with a pulse. Our driving offensive forces late last year (Thompson, Barford, Macon) all return, which most expected one of either Barford or Macon to make the jump to the NBA. Having both return was massive for Mike's team this year. They're ridiculously athletic at every position.

Mizzou returns starting PG, SF, and PF. we Bring in a 5th year senior who was tops in the country in 3's. The only FR we are counting on is Michael porter and Tilmon at the 5. Mizzou is about as veteran as it gets next year.

The counter argument would be the PG, SF and PF that are returning are returning from a team that went 8-24 and 2-16 in the SEC.
However, I do agree, Missouri does have enough veterans and situational depth from those bad teams to complement the new guys. They won't be throwing 5 freshmen on the floor most of the time.

they were the only reason we won as many as 8. The rest of the team was THAT bad.
Phillips(PG)was one of the top PG's in the SEC last year
Barnett(SF)surprised many NBA scouts last week. hes gonna have one hell of a year.
Puryear(PF)Most likely to lose the most PT with Porter, averaged 11/6 so far through his first two years.

Yea I think those 3 are good enough players, but I think his point is logical.
Alabama is adding a Top 5 class to a team that was on the cusp of the NCAAT last year. Missouri is adding a Top 5 class to a team that was the worst in the SEC last year.
Little bit different. However, both should be much improved. Just depends how much.
