I'm a little concerned that we have no passes over the middle between 0- ~40 yards in either game

Agreed. Can someone who knows x's and o's explain why this is?

There were no X's open in the middle
You are welcome.
Actually, I think Stidham is still not seeing the middle very well. Same as the Mercer game. We had guys running so wide open it was pathetic. Something for him to work on between his classes, practice and slaying arse...

From what I understand, it all has to do with how Gus wants to stretch the field. If the defense loads the box you have ideal matchups in the horizontal/vertical stretched passing game
The part that is confusing though is why we don't run combo patterns 10-25yards + 35-40+ yards for different levels downfield
AKA This

Because Gus doesn't understand how a complex passing game works. His idea is basically all or nothing.

I don't think we have any WR or TE who can run those routes. Remembering back when I played HS, it took ballers to run crossing routes.

We have tried but it's been a combination of guys not getting open over the middle, Stidham not willing to risk the throw or guys being out of rhythm
3rd & short. AU runs quick slants from trips. Stidham is looking for Ryan Davis but he hasn't broken yet. He should have stood in here a bit longer and could have made the play
Even on long pass to Stove out of endzone we had a dig underneath Stidham could have hit for first down
That's just the last part of this offense that hasn't clicked

You'd hope Sal Cannella could run those, but he is a little b**** about getting jammed at the line. I saw a 5'9 CB almost knock him over

By "ballers" do you mean "Crazy mofos who have no regard for their personal safety?"

I've noticed Kyle Davis a couple times running a 10-15 yard in route and it was the laziest things I've ever seen. It looked like he was almost running with the DB instead of trying to separate or even come back to the QB just a bit.

Yes. Those. 'Tis where I learned I am better suited for academia vs man sports.

Nice. That's something that can easily be fixed with film study.

Ya, I feel like I see Hastings/Davis run over hte middle frequently but they never get targeted
I just wish Gus had played NFL blitz and would run "Da Bomb" concepts
Run a go/skinny post 30+ with a much more shallow post/slant ~15yd downfield
If neither of those are open, check down to the RB that theoretically is eligible receiver to catch the ball (not that youd' know that watching AU)

That's the biggest thing. Our complete lack of check down/bail out routes if the set up play is covered is baffling.

They are there but again Stidham isn't always looking for them. Other times AU is running max protect to give him more time
A complete passing game is still work in progress. Stidham has to start trusting OL & WRs more. WRs have to get cleaner releases. RBs need to be ready quicker for the checkdowns. We are improving but still plenty to address moving forward
I will say, I am surprised at how much both NCM & KD are struggling to get separation on shorter to mid range passes. Reason Ryan Davis, Will Hastings and Eli Stove are getting so many targets is because they are just doing a better job of getting clean releases and getting some separation

Looking at the gifs you posted, there are no quick slants being run by any of those receivers. A quick slant is all about leverage while getting upfield and the qb delivering the ball in the 5 to 8 yard range to a wr who is able to catch it in stride. Let's look at the first one you posted. There are 3 receivers to the top on a 3rd and 4. Look at the routes they run. All 3 run straight ahead and square the routes in at the first down marker. So not only do we get 3 wr's in the same area at the same time, none of them sold the routes as anything else. The db's just sat there and waited. The end result is that there was nowhere to go with the ball and it ended with a sac.
Now take the same formation and have the inside guy running a seam route up the hash or a deep post. That clears the middle of the field for middle receiver to drive to the outside shoulder of the db to turn his hips. Once his hips turn the receiver should be cutting/ slanting underneath him as the qb is delivering him the ball as he runs open across the middle. This is basic football passing and catching, and for the life of me I can't understand why Gus chooses not to implement simple techniques of leverage that allow his receivers to run themselves open in short yardage situations.

This isn't new to Stidham. Gus doesn't coach the check down.

Looking at the gifs you posted,
The crazier part of the gif he posted is viewing the routes as a whole instead of individually. Our route concepts frequently bunch things together
GIF1 - All 3 field side receivers in trips run ~5yard Dig/cruddy slant routes over the middle. Ya, it is 3&4 but that's absurd
GIF2 - We run only 3 routes yet 2 of them are 4 yards downfield between the hashes.
