I agree. It's pretty strange how or why he got hired in the first place, if I'm being honest.

Well from what I remember, depending on who you believe there was a whole Gruden thing that obviously didn't work out but there WAS actually talk between Gruden and someone related to the University
How much talk? How serious? We will never know but it wasn't as completely ludicrous as most would have you believe
Then we were turned down by Charlie strong and after that it was Butch
I don't remember any other candidates being involved but it was so long ago I can't remember much of the details. I don't remember any big names other than Gruden even being available
As terrifying as it is to say we'd have been so much better off if we could have made it work with Cuttcliffe in 2010 but alas....
ETA: seems like Gundy may have been talked about but didn't happen for whatever reason. Honestly I don't think Gundy would've been much better than Butch

Fedora and Gundy were the other candidates.

Dumpster fire, no one wanted to touch our program with a 10 ft pole. Butch wanted the job and seemed to embrace the Tennessee mindset from the get-go.
This is all hindsight of course, he is a terrible coach.

Do you remember what happened that led to Butch over these two? They not interested? Us not interested? Both? Money?

The same difference any successful mid major coach faces when hired in a major conference....you play 8 or 9 games with talent close to yours instead of 1 or 2.

You don't understand the mess that Dooley left. He did his job and I thank him for that, but he can't take the next step.
So what you're saying is he was able to build a bowl eligible program? And I'm fully aware of what Dooley left behind, but building an 8 win program is not what he was hired to do

UTenn is not an easy job. Their in state recruiting sucks, and I mean sucks bad. They have to go to Ohio, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and North Carolina to get recruits. Luckily they are in the middle of all those states.
My goodness, are you a functioning retard? Just incredible

He was really close to turning the corner the past couple years. A ball bounce here or there and who knows, the situation might be different.
I will say, I am happy what he's done to bring the talent and program back to a level where we will be very attractive for our next hire.

Tennessee has a much harder time pulling kids out of the Carolinas and Virginias than they used to.
Their ability to recruit to the east and south has been hampered by some resurgence by surrounding schools.
This started when Fulmer was there, and never has returned.

The ball bounce here and ball bounce there wouldn't have changed where we stand right now. Even if he won the east last year or the year before we almost certainly would've lost the SECCG and it wouldn't have changed the fact that our coach is still not very good and seems to have a baffling low level of understanding of the X'a and O's of the game and the fact that his offense must adapt to players that don't fit it or those players shouldn't be recruited to start with
I know you weren't defending him but just wanted to point out that the issues we are facing have nothing to do with a ball not bouncing our way

This may be true but I'd like to know why the recruiting sites rankings don't seem to reflect it?
Butch is bad at a lot of things but I don't think anyone can argue with 4 top 10 classes in 5 years

Anyone saying a lack of in state talent is holding Tennessee back as a program in terms of outside perception is a dunce. What was traditionally an unfertile recruiting ground is quickly making a name for itself over the last 5-7 years.
There's currently 20 4* in-state composites in the 2019 class. That's more than every other state in the SEC not named Georgia, Florida, or Texas.
Like it or not for other fan bases, in state recruiting is turning into a big positive for UT (largely thanks to the Nashville metro) and a selling point for potential coaches and staff.
It's time to get someone who can both capitalize on recruiting and is capabable of competent coaching.

2017 - 5th place in SEC recruiting
2016 - 7th place in SEC recruiting
2015 - 2nd place in SEC recruiting
2014 - 5th place in SEC recruiting
2013 - 10th place in SEC recruiting
With classes like that you ain't winning the conference.

And you obviously have no clue what Dooley walked into at UT. Dooley walked into UT as embers were still hot, and still smoking. Given less than 3 seasons, and paid 2mil less. NCAA residing in Knoxville. On and on and on....
Jones was handed so much more on a silver platter than Dooley was.

TOSOV has to be Barbara Dooley. No one else defends little Derek this way.

I thought all the Dooley defenders were finally dead, I guess not quite

Well his previous 2 jobs he followed Brian Kelly and at UT he followed Dooley
