I'll try to do something that's nearly impossible on the Rant. Make a reasonable take.

This is Mullen's 9th year at MSU. If he really wanted to leave he would have had the opportunity to have right now.

He's being paid 4 million dollars plus which equates to a top 15 job. That narrows who can hire him.

He's made Mississippi State his program to facilities, to recruiting, to the gameday atmosphere. And it's evident.

Finally if he leaves for any school that'll pay him more, the expectations will be more. Why leave a place when his fanbase only cares about going to bowl games and defeating Ole Miss. Hell in a few years State will build a statue for him.

If he leaves it's for the NFL, not for another SEC Job. Sorry Aggie lol

No one wants a statue or a legacy in Starkville. Sorry Dawgs, y'all are the runt of the SEC and you'll always eat last when the big dogs are hungry.

He's making 5 mil over the next 4. I just don't see him realistically being worth that to anyone else. Unless he wins the SEC and/or natty, in which case, we will pay him what it takes to keep him.

Then he'll lose money. Notre Dame is paying Kelly as the 65th highest paid coach right now. LINK

Mullen is getting less by by getting 7-8 wins.

If Texas A&M continues to get dominated by the rut, what does that make them?

He hasn't had an opportunity like A&M.

Potential gigs in the SEC can all hire him (A&M, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Florida)

Because coaches are psychopaths who generally don't think like we do.

Realize the state of college coaching. Prime example, Ed O is an LSU fan, he isn't leaving them for anyone. Yet they gave him a 12 mil buyout, why is that?

He has the buyout so they have reason to keep him for the 2-3 years it takes to get your program rolling under a new staff. They buyout was literally just reinforcement so the administration had an excuse when the fans inevitably started calling for his head.

The truth is that you have to be looking to rebuild, willing to sacrifice a few years of people questioning you, and in the end it can always not work out. Leaving you with a damaged resume and out of work.

He currently has a program trending up, with recruiting trending up. He knows it only gets better where he currently is, and he's seeing evidence that he is steadily raising the ceiling.

So yeah, maybe ND lures him away. The most historic program in the country is after all a big prize. But otherwise, I don't see him bolting for the jobs that are soon to be open. Is he worth the 5 mil a year that he currently makes to anyone else? What about the 6 or 7 we would likely match? Nah, I don't think so.

Except that isn't accurate and you didn't read the caveats in the article

Notre Dame only reported Kelly's base salary and not any endorsement/booster/bonus compensation. The missing compensation is usually 3-4mil for guys like Gus Malzahn for example

How does it feel to routinely get your asses kicked by the runt?

Last year you came into town #4 in the country. arse kicked. Hell, Ole Miss beat you last year.

You should sit a few plays out there, sport.

Grad-Stroke

I have told you already.

aTm is a land of sodomites and Dan cares about his children to expose them to that.

He is not going there. Check it out. He doesn't even keep the team there overnight when MSU plays you guys. He refuses to stay in College Station even overnight.

It's not going to happen. You guys need to shoot for Hugh Freeze. More your speed.

A&M - maybe. They'll probably go for someone with Texas ties for recruiting, but it's not outside of realm of possibility that they'd consider him

AU - no way. Too many people at AU think he was behind the Cam Newton stuff years ago and ratted about it to SEC/NCAA. Those who write the checks won't want to deal with him.

LSU - you gonna pay Miles $9M, pay O $12M, and THEN pay Mullen $7M+/season? Doubt it. By the time you guys move on from O, Mullen will either already be gone from State or will have decided he's at State for life.

Tenn - I don't think he'd leave for Tenn. Just doesn't seem a fit.

Florida - McElwain not going anyhwere until at least end of 2018.

Dan Mullen has had every opportunity to leave Starkville for the past 5 years at least. He's still there. He's happy. There's nothing wrong with staying where you are if you like it. Maybe he doesn't want the pressure of a higher profile job. At A&M, 7-8 wins would be a rebuilding year. At MSU, it's a good season. He's making good money, his biggest in-state rival just got eviscerated by the NCAA and will be shite for years to come, thus giving him the recruits he wants in Mississippi. Expectations are manageable in Starkville and he's exceeding them most years and like the previous poster said, slowly raising the bar. It's not a bad gig if you don't have grand aspirations and so far, Dan has shown he doesn't. Kudos to him for knowing what he wants and hanging on to it. The grass isn't always greener.

I love how a home win over an Ed Orgeron coached team turns a team coming off of a 5-7 campaign into a 'contender' and more-or-less guarantees that the second most tenured coach in the league (who has a job where going to a bowl game is enough) will be looking for better job.

Not to mention: He's finally got a 3-5 window to lock down the upper hand for instate recruiting.

I'm not saying any/all of those schools want him. I think he'd be a solid consistency hire for somewhere like A&M, but I don't really want him at AU.

I'm just saying all of those schools have the theoretical pull and $$$ to get him (OP indicated the pool of programs with sufficient resources was very small, and I don't think it is).
