We need to keep a close eye on SMU this season because we're likely watching our offense next year.

I don't have much to add but did want to drop in and say: watching the sips last two coaching hires and LSU's, it's become obvious that the days of stealing big name coaches are pretty much gone. Unless you walk into a lucky situation with a coach wanting to return to his AM (like dabo waiting on bama) it just doesn't happen anymore these days. Just like rojo on texags and his stupid spurrier tale, don't think LSU was ever close to landing Jimbo Fischer.

So that being said, we are going to have to hire an up and comer, it's just the way it is. Of the named I've seen tossed out on this site and texags:

Gary Patterson - not leaving TCU
David Shaw - not leaving Stanford
Chris Petersen - not leaving Washington

Mike Gundy - likely not leaving OSU. Sure we've all read about how he doesn't see eye to eye with T Boone Pickens, but I still don't think he's likely to move. And with Picken's deep pockets they can likely match anything we offer.
Chip Kelley - cheater, don't want him. Oregon was all about using those recruiting agents or whatever they were called that the NCAA cracked down on. Plus I don't think his spread up temp offense wouldnt work in the SEC. we don't have to become a power run team, even a pro style offense could get it done.
Dan mullen - similar to Gundy, I don't think he leaves M State. They can likely match an offer, and have heard he likes the job. He's done a good job there and similar to Patterson at TCU, fan base doesn't get too mad when he has a bad season or two mixed in, because they understand what he's working with.
Gary Kubiak - as CD said, he's still having health issues and might not return to full time head coaching ever. Have heard he wouldn't mind being an anyalst or something still tied to football, but not a head or assistant coach right now. Not sure he'd be 100% interested in college coaching even if he does return.
Les Miles - we could do worse, but we could do a lot better. His offensive style has long been passed up, and I think it speaks volumes that no semi-big to major program has called his number yet....
Chas Morris - obviously seems to be the front runner. I'm not going to say much on him as I haven't watched any of his games where he's been the head coach. Sounds like he's doing a decent job turning SMU around, obviously did a good job as the OC for Clemson, but would like another few years of HC experience to see what we are getting into.
DJ Durkin - similar to Morris, not a lot of HC experience at this point, so a bit of an unknown. Does get bonus points for having already beat the sips.
Justin Fuente - another name that looks pretty good on paper, but don't think he's super interested in leaving VT. But it's definitely a call you make. Still, doesn't have a huge amount of HC yet, but what he does have looks decent.

Outside of those there's the coordinators: Aranda, Schiano, etc. I don't know if they'd make good head coaches as they've never been one so I won't speculate there.

Reading this thread, I feel like I'm in the minority who would truly support chip

Not gonna happen but an aggy can dream about Peterson. I've also been rowing the boat for a while so I'll give him a shoutout

So I mined this thread for names being thrown out and I compiled them into 6 categories as follows:

Make Them Say No (spoiler alert: They All Say No):
Petersen
Meyer
Saban
Fisher
Franklin
Shaw
Patterson
etc. (Its a long list)

OK, Maybe the Say Yes (But Probably Just Get A Raise):
Gundy
Mullen
Leach
Petrino
Fitzgerald

FFCA (Fired Football Coaches Association):
Kelly
Miles
Briles
Gruden
Slocum (you get the point)

Up And Comers (Already At A P5 School):
Fleck (Minn)
Narduzzi (Pitt)
Fuente (VT)
Durkin (Maryland)
MacIntyre (Colorado)

Up And Comers (G5 School):
Morris (SMU)
Frost (UCF)
Kiffin (FIU)

Top School Coordinators:
Schiano
Venables
Aranda

I understand its a going to be a LONG season and its fun to talk about the guys in the first three categories. However, in CFB today there is about a 98% chance that we hire someone from the last three categories. So that amounts to about 10 names and a leaderboard (based on likelihood) that at this point looks something like...

1. Morris
2. Frost
3. Durkin
4. MacIntyre
5. Fleck/Fuente

We alternate between the following since we got rid of Charlie Moran:

Washed up has been who is well past his prime.

Young gun, fired up and slick, who has never won anything but shown flashes of success.

Gene Stallings: Young gun, never won anything
Emory Bellard: Washed up has been
Tom Wilson: Washed up has been (technically came on during Bellard's tenure
Jackie Sherill: Young gun, never won anything
Slocum: Washed up has-been
Fran: "young" gun, never won anything
Sherman: washed up has-been
Sumlin: Young gun, never won anything

We will go with a Washed Up Has Been this time.

Let's pay the buyout and hire Petrino. I don't think anyone is quite as "proven" as he is in the literal sense of the word.

We need real candidates who can instill toughness. Coaches with big boy conference experience and know what it takes to win big games.

Not the Tom Herman types that do the opposite....

Just wanted to pop in and say mike leach at any of the schools we play yearly terrifies me.

He’s not my first choice, but I’d take him over chad Morris in a heartbeat.

Not sure how credible Clay Travis is but this was in his recent article. I know it's only his opinion, but it's more smoke:

"I think there is real momentum for Jimbo Fisher to leave Florida State and I’m told Texas A&M may be firing Kevin Sumlin no matter what happens in the LSU game. That is, the relationship is broken between Sumlin’s bosses at A&M and him.

So I’m actually predicting right now that Jimbo is going to leave FSU and take the A&M job. I think Jimbo wants out of Tallahassee for personal reasons more than anything else."
