Anybody ever wonder why people either love or hate Notre Dame? If anyone should hate Notre Dame, it should be Tennessee fans. For those of you not familiar with what happened, in 1956 Paul Hornung from Notre Dame won the Heisman. All American running back Johnny Majors on the undefeated Tennessee team came in second in the voting. Notre Dame had a dismal 2 - 8 record that year. The Notre Dame loving press tried to make up for Notre Dame's poor season by awarding the Heisman to their best player.

If anyone should've won it that year it's Jim Brown.

It was the biggest robbery in the history of the award.

This plus what happened to Manning is why I hope UT never tries to push a player for the heisman. It's just a marketing ploy by espn.

Johnny Majors should have won it...simply because of his role in preventing Georgia Tech from having a shot to win the NC that year. In '56, GT went 10-1...their sole loss being a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Tennessee's Johnny Majors. At the time of the game, GT was ranked #2 and UT was #3. The winner got an invite to the Sugar Bowl.

We actually have a good rivalry (albeit sporadic) with ND. BUT we don't hate them over the Heisman as much because Johnny wasn't the first or last to get screwed out of one. Majors was a triple threat too - running, throwing and kicking.

That said, he deserved it.

We probably hate them slightly less than others because Knute Rockne (who was considered GOAT of his time) told the press that everyone thought he was the best CFB coach but that Neyland was actually the best CFB coach.

I thought Fulmer stole it from him while he was recovering from surgery. Oh wait, that was 1992.

A little off subject but my Dad always liked Johnny Majors. Why you ask?

My Dad was a State grad (1940) and Majors was an Assistant Coach at State from 1960-1963 and he was always very well liked in Starkvegas and w/MState fans in general.

So in turn I have always liked him as well.
I did not know the story about the Heisman so thanks for sharing it. I always enjoy learning more history about the SEC. Thumbs up from me.

An interesting fact about that '63 State team. We beat Auburn and had two ties (Florida/OM) and our only conference loss was a one point 19-20 to Bama. Basically we were one or two points away from being conference champions that year.
Johnny Majors was the DB coach on that team. Of course they won the famous ICE Bowl (Liberty Bowl) in PHL that year 16-12 over NC State. Jack Cristil's famous quote
"It was colder than a pawnbrokers heart" was from that day. Temp was 15 degrees during the game.
