Is this the make or break year for Butch?

I have many friends from Tennessee and love the eastern part of the State. Hated to see ya'll years in the wilderness following Fulmer. Even though you guys have beat us the last 2 years I think it's safe to say the program is not where you would have wished it would be this far into Butch's tenure. My question: "Is this year make or break for him as your coach and if not, why?

Last year was. They know what they've got now, and will simply wait for his next poor season.
The next time Butch goes 8-4 or worse and loses to Vandy, he gone.

Clearly.

Is this even a question?

You have more faith in the UT administration than I do. If he went 8-4 this season, with a loss to Vanderbilt included, I'd still expect him to be back in '18.

Really? Man I hope that's not the case. My entire reason for the thread is I haven't heard any hot seat talk, and I would expect his to be, given the public sentiment on the state of the program.

Sadly probably not.
Butch will get a pass this year because of talent lost to the draft (even though we have plenty left) and he has a really good class coming in next cycle. We'll probably win 7-9 games without any wins of substance and we'll get some shite about how UT hasn't wont 9 games 3 years in a row in X amount of years.
Were basically stuck in purgatory. If you complain to a CBJ supporter, you hear "well before he took over we were awful, these things take time blah blah blah" yes this is true but we're in year 5 of Butch right now and aren't even predicted top 2 in our weak arse division.
He's done a great job...of lowering expectations
I even think if we go 7-5 he'll be okay (but his seat will be blistering going into next season)

The only saving grace is that we have a new AD, who by all accounts, really wants to hire a football coach.

I agree about him lowering expectations, but I don't even think he could survive 7-5. Not in his fifth season.

I hope Kirby Smart does a great job for us, but if he's not made it to the SECCG by his third year, he will need to go. Butch came in to a much less stocked team than Smart, but after 5 years you gotta start asking yourself the hard questions. You know?

If y'all went 6-6 do you think he would still be around? I don't think y'all will have that little amount of wins; just for sake of argument.

He can probably roll on winning 8-9 games a year indefinitely.
The UT administration has been so maladroit for so long it just boggles the mind.

I just have no faith whatsoever in our AD to do the right thing. Especially with the Haslams involved

Do you have anything concrete on that? Currie seems like a facilities guy. Just like his idiot mentor Hamilton.
Now that Coach Fulmer is a special assistant to the Chancellor or whatever, you have to wonder how the wheels within wheels are going.

Sounds like your boosters need to stop being betas... a major program would not let that happen, IMO.

really sad the new standard of UT football is to just be better than derek dooley. UT is supposed to be an elite program with elite expectations. butch is a middle of the road coach. i am not sure how any sane UT fan can be happy with much of what he's done.
