The city of Auburn is kicking into high gear its efforts to improve downtown parking, which may include purchasing the Baptist Student Center on North College Street. “As part of our plan, we have been working to acquire the Baptist Student Union property on North College and we have been working with Auburn Bank to lease some of their property to provide parking for the downtown employees,” Interim city manager Jim Buston wrote in a memo to members of the city council. “Both of these acquisitions are still in the negotiation process, so they are not yet ready to be brought to Council for your approval. However, I wanted to let you know of our plans at this juncture.”

I'd like to see that spot used for retail, not a parking deck.

Sad news. I spent many hours at that student center as a freshman and sophomore at Auburn.

They'll probably have retail on the ground floor then parking floors 2+. Entrance to the parking deck would probably come from Wright street. (Behind Regions/Next to old Chevron)
They should also do a parking deck on the corner of Wright & Glenn street. Those two parking decks would make downtown parking so much better.

Good news. Parking downtown is atrocious.

It's something like 50-75% of downtown real estate is owned by religious groups.
The only reason I think that is a problem is that they don't pay property taxes + taking up prime retail / food real estate.

Everybody bitches about parking. Then they try to do something about it and we want it to be retail.
Then when they do retail. People will ask why we don't have any parking.

The baptists are staying on the first floor. hopefully they can limit it to the back side of the building.
Ideally, we'd have street level retail on the first floor, but not sure it's possible. They damn sure need to try, though.

191 College just started construction on this corner. This development fronts College, Glenn, and Wright streets.

I haven't been to AU in 7 years. I imagine downtown is completely different.
