Does Georgia Southern still run the option offense?

Do they still run the same offense as Georgia Tech? Triple option?
When is the last time Auburn faced a true triple option offense?

I believe they do. Some idiot on the rant called it a "trap game." Like we don't have all of camp to prep for it. Hell we could have Borges develop the scout team into a triple option team with the time we have in camp.

The thing that sucks about it is it takes time away from Clemson

I hate playing a good option offense. It seems like you only get 3 possessions a half.

I have several friends that Georgian Southern grads and huge southern football friends. They tell me it's a gun option, which is apparently a triple option out of the shotgun with more pistol and zone reads option.
They had a new head coach last year, and a non-option OC trying run an option offense. They brought over the running back coach from Georgia Tech as their new OC this year, but I think the consensus from their fans is it will probably be another tough year for them.

This is very true. It should be a warm up game for our defense but it may not help alot other than getting the guys comfortable in their positions..

It really depends on what the defensive scheme will be this year, particularly in the secondary. Clemson and some other teams will offer enough option looks that the front 7 shouldn't be TOO different. The 3-4 typically has the DL taking up blocks and pushing the point of attack to let LBs read the play and make the tackle. However, if the coverage on the back end are zone schemes mostly, those will likely have to be more man-to-man to properly handle a triple option. Either way, I kinda like the test of our guys' willingness to play assignment football and do just their job while playing within the schemes/calls.

quote:That scares me more than the traditional Paul Johnson wishbone-like triple option offense. Mainly, because now they have the threat of those quick slants over the middle that have been our Achilles' Heel for years. But even with that prospect, I like our chances against them on both sides of the LOS.

Florida's loss to GA Southern in '13, back when GSU was relied almost exclusively on the run, was more due to the Gators' inability to move the ball offensively, especially in the RZ. The Eagles had ~100 yards and had lost two turnovers through the 3 minute mark in the first half, but UF was only up 10-0 after 3 possessions inside the 20. Over their next 4 possessions, they netted a whopping 20 yards, and all of sudden they were down 20-10 and GSU (and the crowd in the Swamp) was smelling blood in the water.
Last year's GSU team was much more balanced on offense, but was pretty gawdawful on defense. How bad, you ask? They gave up 6.15 yards per play against FBS teams. To put that in perspective, Arky State, who we torched for 8.3 yards per play in Game 2 while setting a school record for most yards in a game, allowed only 5.0 per play against FBS teams playing a very similar schedule to GSU. And when the two teams met three weeks after AU trounced stAte, the Red Wolves outgained the Screamin' Eagles 525-365 (and 6.82 yards per snap to 5.37).
So, unless our OL fails miserably at run blocking AND pass protection, we should be able to score plenty of points on them based on talent alone. I expect a closer game than we played against Arky State, but more because we're playing it close to the vest in advance of our road trip to the Mistake on the Lake the following week. In any case, GA Southern shouldn't to pose much of a challenge no matter what offense they run.

Good preview of Georgia Southern
They were not the pure triple option team last year but apparently are going to get back to it this year

Nah. Our Linebacker Corp is finally rebuilt. So long as those cut-blocks don't injury anyone on our DL, we will handle it just fine.

I hope you are right. Not waving a flag or anything but some very good defenses have struggled with that style of offense and blocking schemes.....
Im sure our coaches are on it but Florida and Bama both struggled with it before. Just a thought

Because those were midseason games, so you get 3 days to prep for the option. We get all camp to prep for it.

And even Derek Mason's defense struggled against GT last year.

I'm not worried at all. They wont be able to stop our offense

I'm curious now. Did we go more man-to-man or zone in coverage last year? I have to confess that not being in Auburn anymore and having Vandy season tickets means I didn't watch many games, especially not close enough to identify defensive schemes. Any indication that would change?
