Saban: It's virtually impossible to come up with a defensive scheme to stop RPOs

The man most synonymous with defense and dominance in college football says he’s not wasting any of his time this summer trying to scheme against the sport’s run-pass option plays.

“I don’t think there’s any answer to RPOs,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said.

Executed correctly, it’s almost impossible to defend because the targeted defender can be made wrong no matter which decision he makes.

“You can run a running play, and the offensive line blocks a running play, which the defensive player keys a run,” Saban said, “and the quarterback sits there and does this (mimicking handoff) and then throws the ball, because the safety doesn’t come down or the safety does come down or whatever, there is no solution to that.”

There is a magic bullet that could kill the RPOs, and that’s a rule change that would make it illegal for offensive linemen to be past the line of scrimmage on a passing play, but no defensive coaches in the SEC expect to get that kind of help. (College football allows linemen to be 3 yards past the line of scrimmage when the ball is thrown.)

“If they’re not willing to change that…,” Saban said with his voice trailing off as he shrugged. “But on the other hand, it's exciting. We score like 40 more points a game than what we used to. Our 2011 team gave up eight points a game. The best defense in the country gives up twice that now and it's going to continue to go that way. It’s very difficult to play defensive football when you can't key the difference between runs and passes."

why bother when you can just worry about putting up points

every team is gonna have one game a year at least where they give up 40 ish

So what is his reason for wanting them to change the rules other than him not having an answer to defending it?

There's a solution; just figure it out, preferably without changing the rules.

Clear unfair advantage to the offense as long as linemen are allowed to block past the line of scrimmage on passes. Defense is completely handicapped when linemen are able to do that.

We had a skinny white guy playing WR for us on one of our national championship teams. He'll be taking over for "nick" one day.

Whats the history of RPOs? Which/when coach started the most recent trend or created it? Root scheme from "back in the day"?

Schools that have taken this on?

Im pretty Xs and Os ignorant, so wondering. Thanks

Do y'all really think saban would admit something like this if it were true? He clearly has cracked the code to the RPO and wants to say this to try to get more teams running it so he can crush them easier, all with the same game plan.

4D chess.

He is a great coach who knows his limitations. If you read the piece he was making a true statement. If run correctly it can't be stopped.

Your side runs out of defenders.

The problem with the linemen downfield call is nobody calls it. It's a bitch to monitor. The official is looking for holding, chop blocks, hands to the face, and he's supposed to figure out if the tackle is past 3 yards downfield? It would be much easier if it were one yard. Then, if the lineman is past the line of scrimmage at all, and the ball is thrown, penalty.

If anyone watched the interview, he's not whining at all. He's just telling it how it is. He goes on to talk about how Alabama runs RPOs too, and how it's exciting to score more points.
I do think in his heart, being a defensive coach, he dislikes them, and would rather be more like the NFL in that regard.
I would too tbh. RPOs have made cfb a completely different game to where you basically have to have a running QB now. And all of this sucks for the NFL where they don't need/want RPO QBs. They need dudes that can stand in and throw strikes downfield.

It sucks for defenses, and defensive coaches.

Is it more exciting? Possibly. Idk

And yet we've spent the last 7 years trying to turn Florida into a shitty old school Bama team.

Hopefully our next coach will be an offensive innovator.
