Does anyone on here collect and/or display original works of art? We've gotten into it the last year or so and really enjoy it.
I'd love to see pictures of other people's (art) pieces, if anyone is interested in sharing.

I have a few Will Eskridge and some RA Miller hanging up. I've used several of the Miller's as avatars here over the years.

We buy a good bit of local art. There's a guy from Columbia named Blue Sky (not his Christian name) and we have several pieces from him. A lot of restaurants have art on the wall from local artists for sale and if we see one we really like then we'll look into purchasing it, mainly landscapes. Never have understood or cared for modern/abstract art and I doubt I ever will, so I veto anything like that.

I was not familiar with either of those guys. I like RA Miller's work. We almost bought a somewhat similar folk art piece recently. I'm not as in to Eskridge's work, but I can definitely appreciate the appeal. I'll post some of our pieces when I get a chance.

I wouldn't say we collect it, but we'll buy a piece every now and then if we see one we like and it doesn't break the bank. We only have 5 or 6 pieces in the house.

Have a few pieces.
Best would be a small Dali and Matisse.

I collect limited edition prints and silkscreen posters to shows I go to. I'd like to get into collecting some original paintings at some point but the SO and I have differing taste on art.

What's on his site right now is just what he's into right now. His work varies in style widely. There's a chance you like some of his earlier stuff better, if you lean to the folky side of things. He is very prolific.

It's the thing to like. He's considered the schitzophrenic Godfather of modern American folk art. Living in Athens, you find them in thrift stores and whatnot fairly frequently, and reasonably priced. But when you go online to buy them from dealers, they are outrageous.

My wife's best friend from high school used to own an art gallery. We found a couple of painters that we like and try to buy something once a year.
Tom Findley.
Nall
Both are local Bham guys. I hope their stuff appreciates. I'd love for one of my progeny to be on the Antiques Roadshow with a million dollar painting.

We have looked at a lot of Nall's work. We really like it. The originals can get very pricy (10-20k), although he does some prints where he signs them and makes an original frame. I think his work will appreciate.
PS - he's the reason Ringo Starr has some Alabama gear, because they are friends and he has painted Ringo's portrait. Supposedly, Nall trained for a time under Dali.

We got most of our Nall stuff from my wife's girlfriend. Not sure we could afford muc of it on our own. The Findley stuff is much more reasonable. I usually get one or two of his smaller works every year. I think I have Nall's art book at home signed by him.

Definitely hold on to the Nalls.

Does a signed Al Dimeola 12" count? It's hanging on my wall.

We have one Nall.
I have picked up a few pieces from a folk artist out of Woodville, Alabama, named Suzanne Buckner. (Sorry for the glare, these are in our foyer and the afternoon sun was shining in).
My favorite artist - and a great friend - is Sloane Bibb. He lives in Decatur and graduated from Auburn. His last name was McWhorter when he was at Auburn. (Long story).
He's picked up big time and has has showings all over the country.
He does some fabulous mixed media work now but we have a HUGE piece that he painted specifically for our 10 anniversary. I actually designed my formal living room around it. An art dude in Atlanta wanted to give us $15,000 for it last year because Sloane doesn't paint in that style any longer. To give some perspective, these are 18 foot ceilings.
Here's his website.
He's so talented.
I can't post them all - just go look at what shows up when you Google image search his work. Amazing.
