Makes no sense to me. Nick Chubb and Sony Michel had to meet with Cheney to convince him to lean on them more. Why any RB would wanna play for that dude I don't know. Dell McGree has done a great job selling UGA as a place for 1-2 RB tandems. Did it last year and did it again this year. Props to him

I just saw Cook de-committed, but he looks like all UGA. I know we kept talking about trying to get in on him. Any chance that's still a possibility.

All UGA per Keith.

UGA board on the recruiting boards said they are selling him as basically being the backup to Zamir White. Why in the hell would a kid that highly rated even entertain that pitch?

McGee is doing a great job of pitching UGA as a place for running back tandems. Like I broke down on recruiting board, AU has done fine getting the #2 guy touches too but we definitely ride one guy harder. Pitching the idea of having more tread on the tires plus still getting production in a "pro style" system seems to be be playing real well. Also like one of their posters said, UGA has a bit more "star power" or flash at the RB spot. Guys like Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb draw more admirers than Barber or Artis-Payne

KN put out a recruiting insider covering prospects at The Opening

- Both those connected at AU and those elsewhere seem to really believe AU is one of the top contenders for 5* QB Justin Fields. The consensus to KN's sources are that the biggest challenger will be FSU. KN says he still wouldn't count out UF or UGA especially the Dawgs as people on their side seem to have a lot of confidence right now. A few prospects said they think Fields ends up at UGA but KN noted those guys were all UGA leans as well so that could play a role in their assumptions. Fields is extremely close with Lindsey and his laid back style seems to be working really well. FSU seems to have ramped up their recruiting on Twitter with players telling him he should come play at FSU. Fields wants to have a decision before the season but it's not set in stone and chances are good he will take his official visits regardless

- KN says it really does feel like an AU/CLEM battle right now for 5* Justyn Ross. The Bama chatter has died down and apparently AU ppl think CLEM leads and CLEM ppl think AU leads. Both sides tho are definitely not counting the Tide out obviously. He plans to visit both schools for games this fall and will be at AU's recruiting picnic July 22nd. Ross was on Lawrence's 7v7 team whose colors were of course orange and purple. However, KN says on the field there wasn't much chemistry between the 2 players tho it's not known how they connected off the field. Their families talked some. Bottom line is AU staff feels if they have a strong season on the field they will get Ross

- BAMA & UGA are top 2 for 4* TE Luke Ford but AU is a factor. We have offered his 19 year old brother a preferred walkon spot which no other team has done and he really likes

- AU is still recruiting 4* CB Kyler McMichael. It's not certain whether he will visit again or not as Clemson's staff doesn't like commits taking visits but AU is going to keep working on it

- AU is still hard after 4* LB JJ Peterson and he plans to visit again soon but Bama is still the clear leader

- SCAR is the trending team for 4* LB Channing Tindall but AU is very much in the race. We are recruiting him at the Buck/OLB spot where he would have a chance to rush the passer something he finds intriguing as we only team giving that pitch right now. Wants to camp at AU so he can work with T-WILL. If that trip happens, KN says AU could be one to really watch

- KN is still trying to get more intel on 4* RB Harold Joiner but says it's clear he's made a 180 on AU. The two main reasons being LSU has loaded up at RB and Malzahn called him to tell him they want him purely as a RB. He plans on visiting later this month

- AU is making real progress on 2019 5* LB Owen Pappoe. The main reason being Travis Williams who Pappoe says is his favorite coach. Clemson tho is the clear frontrunner and he might commit soon. No matter what though AU plans to keep hard after him and he plans on being at the picnic on July 22nd

- AU is still recruiting 4* CB Jalyn Armour-Davis and there's a good chance he will visit again

Auburn’s 5 most newsworthy prospects, items from The Opening (SECCountry)
quote:

5-star QB Justin Fields

Nothing earth-shattering surfaced, but everyone learned a few things about Justin Fields.

He may end up ranked the top QB in the country. He may end up ranked the top prospect in the country. He orchestrated impressive game-winning drives that ultimately helped him capture the Elite II MVP and Opening MVP.

But everyone who has watched Fields to this point had an inkling he could do all of those things. There is much less certainty where he’ll commit.

Fields confirmed two major visits in the coming weeks. He will make his first overnight visit to Auburn on July 13. He’ll visit Georgia on July 16. SEC Country has been told those two visits will have a significant influence on whether Fields decides in July or deeper into the football season.

The information I’ve gathered suggests that, if Fields were to wait well past those visits, it would be positive news for Auburn. The longer he waits, the more likely Georgia is to be eliminated from the race. But if he decides soon, that could be trouble for the Tigers and likely positive news for the Bulldogs.

Also, don’t rule out Florida State here. Auburn and Georgia both consider Florida State to be the biggest threat. Florida, once the favorite, appears to have taken a back seat to the other three programs.

Auburn is very much in this, even though Florida State and Georgia have received slightly more national coverage regarding Fields.

4-star WR Justyn Ross

Justyn Ross opened up to reporters slightly more than usual, which meant we were able to gather a few extra tidbits.

He’s been leaning toward a certain school for a little while, but there is reason to believe it’s any of the three main programs he talks about — Auburn, Alabama and Clemson. Ross also said it was Auburn and Clemson, not Alabama, that was recruiting him the hardest. That’s a change of pace from earlier in the spring.

As for performance, Ross flashed a few highlight-reel plays, including a couple one-handed catches. I’m not sure it was enough to secure a full-time fifth star, but there’s no disputing Ross is one of the five best wide receivers in the nation.

Ross hasn’t altered his decision timeline. It’s still expected to happen later into the season. That’s more positive news for Auburn. The Tigers already sit in great position — and I’ve been given reason to believe Auburn is his implied leader — but a successful passing game this fall would be the confirmation Ross needs to choose the Tigers.

4-star RB Harold Joiner

Harold Joiner managed to clear up some of the confusion about him entering the event.

LSU and Georgia are, in fact, out due to their recent flurry of running back commits. That created a reshuffled list of Alabama, Auburn, UCLA, USC, Texas and Michigan State. He said Michigan State is his leader, but he hasn’t visited there, nor has he gone to UCLA, USC or Texas. That’s why I view Alabama and Auburn as the only expected destinations on that list, and the Crimson Tide don’t appear to be eager to take him.

Auburn has altered its stance with him, however.

Gus Malzahn personally called Joiner prior to the start of the dead period. Malzahn told Joiner he wants him in Auburn’s class as a running back who could also play some wide receiver. Joiner is OK with that pitch. Malzahn also wants Joiner to visit Auburn for the mid-July picnic so he can have some 1-on-1 time with Joiner and his father.

If Joiner makes that visit, which I expect him to do, then Auburn could quickly become the team to beat. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see him commit before the summer ends.

He also shined in a specific drill during The Opening. In the cat-and-mouse drill, a running back with a ball is tasked with running head on with a defensive player attempting to tag the running back. Joiner went untouched the event for most of the weekend, showcasing his rare athleticism.

4-star OG Tank Jenkins

Tank Jenkins didn’t make the trip out to Oregon for The Opening, citing a sickness.

I haven’t been able to gather much information here, but it certainly comes as a surprise. I spoke with Jenkins the Thursday before he was scheduled to fly out, and he told me how excited he was to get to the camp and impress in a similar way to what he did when he won OL MVP at the Charlotte regional.

When it gets to decision time for Jenkins, I think two schools remain in contention: Auburn and Missouri.

Missouri has the pull of his cousin and close friend James Foster, who committed to play quarterback there earlier this fall. Auburn has been a school after Jenkins for a while, and he visited within the last month.

Jenkins told SEC Country his decision, once set for midsummer, will likely drag into the football season. He may even wait until after the season to decide.

4-star LB Channing Tindall

Channing Tindall, much like the Atlanta regional, became the star of the show at The Opening.

Several people left the event saying Tindall was clearly the best linebacker in attendance. Granted, this all happened without pads, but Tindall has had one of the fastest rises of any prospect this spring.

On the recruiting front, Auburn received some more good news when Tindall said South Carolina is no longer is surefire No. 1 school. Auburn leveled up with the Gamecocks. In some less positive news, Florida, Georgia and Notre Dame have also worked their way into a five-way tie atop Tindall’s leaderboard.

The main thing to track with Tindall going forward: Does he come camp with Auburn coaches?

He said he hopes to get back to Auburn for some 1-on-1 time with Travis Williams and Kevin Steele. There will be a camp opportunity on July 14 and July 21. If Tindall returns to the Plains for either of those, it’ll be a good indication where Auburn stands with him.

Starting to think we might get this kid. If he visits this summer and camps then I think we pull it off but we will see. Muschamp ain't easy to beat on the recruiting trail

July Recruiting Snapshot

Another month means another post where I vomit words all over your screen... This is a subjective overview of where AU stands with many of their top targets and where they might stand on our board based off what I have read from various outlets. No doubt stuff is wrong but should at least let those who don't follow closely get a quick and easy understanding of where things are

Commits
4* QB Joey Gatewood
4* DE/DT Daquan Newkirk
3* OG/C Jalil Irvin
3* RB Shaun Shivers
3* OG Kameron Stutts
3* WR Shedrick Jackson
3* ATH Kolbi Fuqua

Jackson breaks the 2 month long commit drought. Hopefully there are 1-2 more names on this list next month

QB
5* Justin Fields --> AU/FSU/UF/UGA battle with every team's insiders saying they lead
5* Emory Jones --> OHST commit that seems locked in with Buckeyes

RB
4* Asa Martin --> AU/UF/BAMA battle. Bama has made him a priority but some on AU side still feel good
4* Dameon Pierce --> AU/UF battle. Will become the #1 target if Martin goes Bama in August
5* James Cook --> FSU decommit, all UGA right now
4* Harold Joiner --> who the frick knows

WR
5* Justyn Ross --> AU/CLEM recruiting hardest but BAMA always lurking
4* Matthew Hill --> AU leads but SCAR is pushing, could commit this month
4* Kearis Jackson --> committing in August, UGA the leader but Fields commitment could make things interesting
4* Marquez Ezzard --> Has turned into FSU/UGA battle
4* Seth Williams --> AU making it interesting but most think Bama in the end
4* Anthony Schwartz --> Gators clear #1, AU might be #2, UGA lurking
4* Jacob Copeland --> doesn't sound like he a priority anymore, BAMA/UF battle
4* Tommy Bush --> name to monitor if visits again

TE
3* Michael Parker --> earned offer at camp & might now be a top target
3* Tyneil Hopper --> camped @ AU, still unsure where he is on board
3* John FitzPatrick --> looking like an UGA lean
3* Tommy Tremble --> another UGA lean

OT
4* William Barnes --> AU appears to be fading
4* Richard Gouraige --> not looking good here either
4* Nicholas Petite-Frere --> more of the same not good
4* Dylan Wonnum --> Tigers a darkhorse in this race. SCAR might be the leader
3* John Campbell --> just recently committed to MIA
4* Qadir White --> not sure how hard we are recruiting
4* Badara Traore --> officially visiting AU this summer
NR Doug Johnson --> backup option AU might pursue if above names go elsewhere

OG
4* Trey Hill --> AU probably running #3 behind UGA & CLEM
4* Tank Jenkins --> could end up being the 3rd OG if we take 3
3* Jerome Carvin --> listed as an OT but I think we are recruiting as guard, TEN/BAMA also after him

DT
4* Coynis Miller --> AU/BAMA battle with both sides feeling good
3* Jalen Cunningham --> AU trending up but he's Bama if they want him
3* John Mincey --> UGA lock
3* Tramel Walthour --> probably UGA lock
4* Tayland Humphrey --> will visit AU soon I believe, A&M/LOU top 2
4* Alfred Thomas --> doesn't look like AU will offer

DE/Buck
3* DE Andres Fox --> AU/LSU/BAMA battle, pushing decision back some
4* Richard Jibunor --> AU/TEN battle with Tigers in good spot, will announce in August
4* Caleb Tannor --> AU/UGA/TEN battle with Dawgs probably in 1st, wants to commit before season
4* Azeez Ojulari --> UGA lean but AU pushing

LB
4* Michael Harris --> looking like OHST will pass, will become AU/UGA battle
4* JJ Peterson --> BAMA still team to beat but AU still working hard to land him
4* Zakoby McClain --> AU no longer sole leader, LSU a major threat
4* Channing Tindall --> no longer has SCAR as sole leader but shared with AUB/UF/UGA. Might camp later in July
3* Nathaniel Watson --> no idea where he is on our board but appears MSST recruiting harder

CB
3* Juanyeh Thomas --> on commit watch, GT/UF other top teams
4* Jordan Miner --> will commit to PSU soon
3* Charles McClelland --> might becoming a top target
3* Kendrick Torain --> have not heard much on him recently
3* JaKorey Hawkins --> name to monitor if AU keeps missing at CB
Xavier Lanier --> visited for BCW, big senior year or camp could lead to offer

S
4* Quindarious Monday --> looking like he's all CLEM right now but will visit AU soon
3* Jamien Sherwood --> AU has emerged as the probable leader. MIA still one to watch
3* Joseph Foucha --> LSU has offered and it's changed the game. Feeling is AU still leads but if LSU really wants em might not go well for AU
3* Myles Mason --> no idea where he is on our board, chances are good he's behind the other 3

Class Prediction

Again I don't know the real numbers so just to make it easy going with 25. When we get closer to NSD should have better idea of actual numbers

5* QB Justin Fields --> every team insiders seem to think at worst we are #2
4* QB Joey Gatewood (Commit)
4* RB Dameon Pierce --> hoping he's our one back
4* RB/WR Harold Joiner --> not sure he will land with us if we also take Pierce but what the hell it's July
3* RB Shaun Shivers (Commit)
3* TE Michael Parker
4* WR Justyn Ross --> #believe
4* WR Matthew Hill
4* WR Kearis Jackson --> still sticking with the get Fields, get Jackson theory
3* WR Shedrick Jackson
4* OT Dylan Wonnum --> we have to get somebody right?
4* OG Tank Jenkins --> MIZ/OK are real threats
3* OG/C Jalil Irvin (Commit)
3* OT/OG Kameron Stutts (Commit)
4* DE/DT Daquan Newkirk (Commit)
4* DT Coynis Miller --> every AU site reporting we lead so I guess I need to believe
3* DE/BUCK Andres Fox --> if momma lets him
4* Buck/LB Richard Jibunor
4* Buck/LB Channing Tindall --> makes the trip and we land him, guessing McClain goes LSU right now
4* LB Michael Harris --> OHST might take K'Vaughn Pope soon and if so I think we land Harris in August
3* CB Juanyeh Thomas
3* CB Charles McClelland
3* S Kolbi Fuqua (Commit) --> I think ends up a S
3* S Joseph Foucha --> really worrying about losing him
3* S Jamein Sherwood

Class Score: 274.54 (7-10)

Damn sounds like Ohio State not taking K'Vaughn Pope's commitment. Just tweeted he's gonna hold off on committing. Made it very clear earlier that he wants to go to Ohio State. Was hoping he would jump on and that would eliminate Buckeyes for Michael Harris
