To me the most frustrating thing about the Chavis hire year two is I don't even know what our take away is. I don't mind being wrong about him if only we could understand WHY we were wrong.

Do we learn to give up on defense in Texas and make sure going forward all of our expectations (and money) is dumped on the offense? Do we need to put a tombstone for the wrecking crew next to the dead dogs?

Did we learn Chavis is a fraud that somehow lasted in the league an amazingly long time? Or maybe we got him right as he washed up?

Did we learn that we have a glass ceiling in recruiting until we get someone who can bring in big boys from outside Texas?

What did we learn?

I think we learned a couple of things:

1. He's mortal
2. It's difficult to field a good defense these days
3. Any defensive coordinator, good or bad, will struggle under a coach like Sumlin who uses a finesse offense
4. Our S&C program still has a way to go

We learned that depth is the end all be all in the SEC when it comes to defensive success. A ton of our defensive woes under both Chavis and Snyder are directly related to injuries that can't be overcome due to players not panning out and/or getting kicked out of school.

Injuries wrecked the starting 11. We don't have impact depth. IMO he's been addressing the front seven and our ability to stop the run through recruiting this term. He's added long DBs that fit his style.
We always talk about giving coaches time to get their guys in place. I feel like I saw progress this year. It wasn't a finished product, but it wasn't Mark Snyder either.

Hopefully we learned to think twice when a coach reaching out to us.

What did we learn?

We learned that Sumlin is poison to quality coordinators.

Leave the dead dogs alone before I start making Hank threads again.

There are DC's out there who do less with more. And considering chavis has almost exclusively had top level talent, I don't think he's as good as we were led to believe.
