Sorry, this won't be another trash talking post.

It's clear Saban is the GOAT. My curiousity though is how he manages to win, and do so as consistently as he does. Regardless of what phase of the program Alabama is in (green or experienced) he still manages to field something that threatens to win the NC year in and year out. Obviously his teams aren't without their weaknesses, but even those he manages to hide them almost perfectly.

(Spare me the talk about the REC. He's also turned around LSU's program as well.)

So my question is: What separates him from literally every other coach? Is it just genius? Ridiculous work ethic? Or both?

I think he definitely has a great work ethic, but so do most big time HC's. more than anything, I think it's his willingness to adapt. He will make changes at the drop of a hat. No matter who's feelings get hurt.

I'd say both. He's a meticulously detailed planner. He also is very knowledge, and hashe the best overall support staff in college football. But while tough to work and play for, he's consistent. He lets everyone know exactly what their job is and their expectations.

He's also a great motivator. It's human nature to relax and enjoy the accomplishments. But he intentionally fights the natural instinct. It's why he coaches harder during a blowout.

I think he is intelligent for sure, but it was hard work implementing his process that has brought the success he is seeing now. It helps to be associated with a historically strong football program.

He has always said the key to his success is relentless work, but it took intelligence to come up with his process.

Every offseason since Saban has been at Bama, he's had NFL and other college coaches visit Tuscaloosa. They spend a few days hanging out and talking football philosophy. He is constantly learning and reaching out to other successful coaches. It's how he not only got to the top, but had managed to stay there.

It also takes a certain personalty to want to play for Saban. If you have a weak work ethic, you're not going to want to sign at Bama. He clearly lays out what's expected, and it won't be easy. But the rewards cam be very high.

he is all the things said about him here... hard worker, meticulous, driven. what sets him apart is he also demands these traits from everyone involved and isnt afraid to be an a-hole to make that point. he is also not willing to compromise.

Both, I read somewhere that he doesn't let his assistants leave until he clocks out himself. The man is a machine when it comes to preparing for upcoming games.

Bobby Williams: "Nick can see things on the field that would take most coaches multiple film sessions to pick up on."

That's not true about the assistants. But if you are getting paid hundreds of thousands to coach for the best college coach in the business, would you leave to go home before he's out the door?

Glad to see Saban get the respect he deserves. He's the best and most complete package of football skills of all time. Complacency is success's biggest enemy and the Achille's heal of all coaches. Saban has stifled it better than any coach in history.

I agree with this. As a high school coach of a winning program one of the hardest things to combat amongst coaches and players a like is complacency. Very difficult with new kids in the program who think playing for the program automatically means a title. Saban in hi tenure at Alabama has done a remarkable job of never being satisfied

He didn't do it at Michigan State. He was just an average coach there. They didn't let him have all of the extra funds for facilities and 40 extra "assistants" like he was able to start establishing at LSU and continued on at Bama. He does have a high football IQ, but it's all the additional advantages over other schools that makes him hard to beat. It's nice when you can distribute the work load amongst 70 or so people. He also learned that Louisiana is the most fertile ground for recruiting while here. He's really good, no doubt. But he has tons of help.
