It doesn't have to shut down playoff caliber teams. It needs to be competitive with them. Slow those offenses down. Also need to recruit more NFL caliber players.
2013 was a really good team because it had multiple future pros on both sides of the ball. Especially the lines.

well that should be easy.
I dont have any faith that WiBO is going to bring Mizzou into the consistent top 20-15 type recruiting classes. This goes back to my opinion that under Pinkel the team schemed the way they did to compensate for the overall talent gap.

Right. We way outperformed our recruiting rankings most years under Pinkel once he got the ball rolling.
I don't see any indication that Odom is going to recruit demonstrably better, if at all. Frankly that's not his fault because we are a tough school to recruit to, but that just leads back to needing to play above your recruiting ranking. Maybe that's too unique, IDK, but if Odom is going to be successful here that is what he has to do. Just very hard for me to grasp that a man who was here to see the formula would want to change it.
From 07 to 15 we were legitimately in the national title hunt 2 times heading into the final week, and won 10 games 3 other times. People won't want to hear this, but it's probably not getting any better than that.
I was confident BO could and would continue the formula. Make it his own, but for the most part stick to what works. Doesn't appear that's his plan. We'll see how it works out, but so far...

One area he isn't lacking? Confidence.

The south end zone project will help recruiting.
Posted on 10/10/16 at 10:48 pm to wubilli
If 2 years of winning the East didn't help recruiting why do you think the south end zone project will help recruiting?

Exactly. I've yet to hear or read anything, that can fully explain, why the change was needed, at this point and time..... A leaked play book..... BS
One would think it would have been a smart move. to take a year, and work to fix what was broken.... Which of course was the offense.
All I hope for the rest of the season, is to see game to game improvement.
Not holding my breath for a bowl, unless we see some real consistent improvement on the field.

It will help, for sure.
Still have several other deficient areas though

Because Mizzou is way behind facilities wise in the SEC. coaches tend to avoid even taking players into the locker rooms because it's so inferior to the competition.

At this point, you have the captain of the defense essentially stating that there are players that aren't interested in learning their craft to make the team better, that they want to do what is familiar. These players that have NFL dreams are going to have a season full of tape of them not doing their jobs in an NFL scheme. They are going to get plenty of questions why if they are lucky enough to get interviewed by NFL squads. It would be in their best interests if they start doing their jobs better instead of wanting it simple.
I hope Odom is clearly communicating this to them.
Otherwise they'll simply blame the scheme change for depriving them of pre-ordained 1st round draft status.
Question: I wonder if anyone tries to transfer out to the Hurricanes?

He's not just changing a scheme he's changing a culture. I honestly don't care if we play in the dog food bowl this year.

Mizzou's facilities aren't and were never the problem or solution. Pinkel didn't go after the top players. He recruited 3 star kids that he was confident would be in the system for 5 years. Those kids weren't being recruited by the big schools with the Taj Mahal facilities in the first place. Besides there is no way to buy your way into recruiting, T Boone tried it at Okie Lite to the tune of 450 million, Under Armour tried it at Maryland (they built 2 training facilities), even Nike's investment in Oregon went to hell once Kelly left, hence their lack of talent and inability to recruit a QB even with Mariotta winning the Heisman.
BO currently has more long snappers committed than DE's and DL's combined. He's now getting down to the leftover kids, how many of those kids fit his new defensive scheme? You can't make wholesale changes without a solid recruiting plan. Even the protest should have helped recruiting. While it upset whites, having black athletes stand up for something black families face daily is not a negative, it's very positive. And lets face it, most recruits are black.
for those who say the athletes are acting "spoiled." Imagine working your arse off and doing your job better than most everyone in the country, you're in line for a big promotion, and your boss wants you to start at square one. Now you suck at your job and the promotion is at risk...it would be a bit frustrating to say the least.

Facilities are most certainly an issue. Not the only issue, but a major one.
Pinkel recruited several highly ranked kids every year. He just rarely signed them. He was even quoted that if he could recruit a class full of 4/5 star kids that he would much prefer to do that, but he couldn't so he had to make what he could get work.

IMO, facilities are for boosters and fans to brag about. Miami has had HORRIBLE facilities. Clemson's facilities did nothing until Dabo arrived. Michigan has one of the best indoor football facilities, but it didn't matter until Harbaugh got there.
If Nike, Under Armour and a Billionaire can't buy recruits to maintain a program, do we really believe Mizzou will? Oregon gets 200 million a year. They have more money than anybody including Bama. Halfrick cannot recruit at a high level, despite Brazilian wood floors etc. Recruiting will be and has always been about the head coach. If I had a choice between the South End Zone and Les Miles for recruiting purposes, I would choose Miles in a second.

Miles would recruit at nowhere near the same level at Mizzou as he did at LSU, for several factors. Facilities just being one of them.
If facilities dont matter then why are we dropping 75M on them, just to start? Hell, we could have just taken that money and offered Chip Kelly 15M per year for 5 years.
Of course they matter, and its the one thing we can fix in a relatively short period of time with money.
Put it this way, someone is giving you a weekend getaway.
First offer is a luxury lake house with a stocked bar and a yacht in the boat slip. Second offer is the motel 6 2 miles inland and a coupon for half off a pontoon rental. How good of a salesman does the guy have to be to get you to take option 2?

Sorry, I wasn't implying Miles would recruit at the same level, what I meant was Miles would have a greater impact on recruiting than the South End Zone.
And I agree, I would rather offer Chip Kelly a truckload of money, and I bet Nike and Oregon would too. Our 75 million is nothing compared to Nike's damn near Billion dollar investment in Oregon. They wanted Bama type recruits, what they got was 70 points put on them by Washington.
The investment worked for Kelly because recruits bought into Kelly's big time offense. Without him, the big west coast recruits aren't choosing Oregon.
Florida can say they have a great football facility, but the truth is they just built it last year. Before that, they practiced indoors in a parking garage (not exactly a yacht), yet Spurrier recruited his azz off.
Don't get me wrong, I want the south end zone project done because it looks cool and I believe the football program deserves it. But just like Iowa's 50 Million dollar project, I don't think it will change recruiting. Now replace the DB coach with Joker Phillips, and that will get a bump in recruiting

Like it or not, we have to give these coaches a couple of years b4 we really know if they can recruit and if they can coach. Facilities can help, coaches are more important. If we were in Miami it might not matter as much.
BO has been fairly clear that he wants to compete for championships and a scheme that's more sophisticated than a high school scheme has to be part of that. He's not just changing the scheme, he's changing the culture which is gonna take more than 5 games. They keep taking things out to simplify it, but I'm starting to wonder if we are Dline and simple scheme U.
So do you give up and dump the scheme for better games in the short run? Do you try to phase it in (if that's possible)? Do you stick with it until they get it? All questions I bet the coaches ask themselves on a weekly basis. I don't see any signs of arrogance or incompetence. Change is not easy. For the fans as much as the players.

Cross says "significant changes" made to the defense during the bye week.
We'll see, at least they are trying to fix the problem beyond "play better"

At Memphis he blitzed with a ton of different packages. He did not have the talent but it was very effective. He has abandoned that . It worked in Memphis and last year here
