More evidence of players not buying in. Not being comfortable. Asking for simpler calls. Etc. coaches doing a poor job of implementing.

This entire scheme change has been an unmitigated disaster from jump street.

I contend it was a very poor idea to change in the first place, but what's not really in question is that the coaches have done a very poor job ushering in the change they wanted to make.

How do you feel about the defense, Jesus?

I'm still not clear on your position.

He is right though man. The scheme change has been nothing but a disaster. Its on WiBO. He needs to own it. His ego may have gotten the better of him. I dont buy the change was necessary because of a leaked playbook. That's nonsense.

If it leads to a consistently better defense over the next several years it's a good move. To panic after only 5 games is the mark of a bad organization.

Buy in and do your job. It's pretty simple.

But it's going to be hard for the defense to be consistently better than it has been. If it is, great, but it was performing pretty well over the past several years.

I'm not panicking after 5 games. I was panicking as soon as it was announced in fall camp, but that doesn't change the fact that it's been a massive failure thus far.

Yeah, I guess we should just fire Barry Odom now.

Do you think the defense can be "consistently" better than it was the previous few seasons? I could understand tweaks to try and plug the run game but the complete overhaul with expectations that the defense will be "better" in the long run is very questionable to me. It smells like an ego driven move to me quite frankly.

Only time will tell but if the defense doesn't perform better than it has the last couple years its a net loss and throwing away the "dlinezou" reputation in the process.

Put it this way, when Mizzou has faced teams with legit playoff chances we haven't been very competitive on defense. This defensive scheme is designed to combat those teams.

So maybe not a better ranked defense, but one designed to stop those offenses.

It's a massive failure if is isn't working in year 3.

At this point, you have the captain of the defense essentially stating that there are players that aren't interested in learning their craft to make the team better, that they want to do what is familiar. These players that have NFL dreams are going to have a season full of tape of them not doing their jobs in an NFL scheme. They are going to get plenty of questions why if they are lucky enough to get interviewed by NFL squads. It would be in their best interests if they start doing their jobs better instead of wanting it simple.

I know, I know.

Sucks that the talent we have on defense is being squandered. We recruited these guys because they had experience playing our scheme and they excelled at it. It makes no sense to change things up. Barry Odom doesn't seem to understand the concept of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

You do realize that they aren't throwing this away, but are trying to make it better? This scheme will allow the staff to disguise coverage and hide pressure far more effectively than a one gap front 7 with Tampa 2 coverage.

I dont think they are intentionally throwing anything away but a couple of poor seasons can erase what was built as far as perception whether they want it to or not.

I don't get it. It's a basic style that most high school teams run. Why is Missouri struggling so much with it?

Wait so you think that this is as good as the defense can be in this scheme?

Give it a year or 2 where the players have been given a full chance to learn the system. It can be better. A number of top college and pro teams run the same type of defense.

It's a lot more complex than any high school team runs.

But the real issue is that it's not natural to the players. Most have spent multiple seasons running a different system. It's just taking a beat down to maybe get some to understand that they just have to do their own job.

Too bad we lose a lot of good guys in two years.

Will also add a bunch of talented players.
Howard and Williams are probably the second and third best DEs, both are redshirting.
The 2 LBs in the 2017 class are really exciting.
2 true freshmen CBs are playing this year.
And if they land the trio of DLs from STL in 2018 the defense can be better.

We are always going to have problems with playoff caliber teams. They have better players. There isn't a scheme that exists that is going to have us consistently shutting down top 5 teams.

What we did have though, is a scheme that was very good at creating negative plays. We also had an identity that really doesn't apply anymore.
