Just now watched the Ole Miss game. Am I crazy to think we might play better without Hogg? He's so careless with the ball and goes on cold streaks constantly. Passes looked crisp, good flow, hardly any turnovers last night....

Our whole team is careless with the ball, and Hogg has been the best player on our team too often to say we're better without him.
Execution was crisp last night. And we tore up a bad defensive effort from a weak Ole Miss.

if we had hogg they probably wouldnt have played the majority of the game in a zone, and if gilder wasnt on fire it might not have even mattered that they did.

Hogg has the ball in his hands way too often for my liking, but outside of Gilder I'm not sure I can name a player I'd rather have it in on this team. We need play makers in a bad way.

stats thru Ole Miss game for your consideration
Offensive Efficiency (ie, points scored per 100 possessions player is on the court)
Hampton 116.3 (wow, really??)
Tyler 114.9
Williams 114.7
Gilder 114.2
Trocha 111.6
Tavario 106.6
Hogg 101.1
Collins 99.7
In conference Hogg's OE is 88.7 while Collins, getting first team minutes now, is 113.8.
Hogg actually shows out okay on the defensive end (middle of the pack) but he's rarely if ever been our best player. Carolina is the only game I can even think of (and even then he had 6 turnovers). That said, we aren't deep enough to remotely be a better team without him.

yep, this.
Honestly, Hogg should probably play a Josh Carter type of role where all he does is shoot open looks but our crappy guard play leaves us with few alternatives. I just think he's been trying to do too much.

Isn't it nice when we actually talk basketball on the thread instead of extreme viewpoints on the coaching staff either direction?

yes. This is true of any thread

Collins' OE is that high because he does almost nothing while on the court. His usage rate in conference is barely 10%, lowest of any player in the SEC that players 40% of more.

oh sure. He's definitely drafting off of the other players. Put me on the court with Michael Jordan and I'm gonna have a pretty good OE.
But I'm not sure why you are critical of his usage. I don't want him taking shots (or turning it over). Team success is a function of people playing their parts. He's doing that. When he's on the court, we score at a pretty good rate.
Overall we need better players but he's done okay offensively (where he's lacking is on the defensive end)

I'm not critical of his usage. But when it differs that much from another player, it's more misleading than productive to compare their offensive efficiencies

oh look, turnovers are once again going to cost us the game

For the love of God, take Collins out

To be fair, WVU is #1 in the country in turnovers forced. However, we're not doing ourselves any favors. No idea why Collins is taking the ball up the court when Hampton or Gilder are on the court. Dude is really really rattled.

kennedy keeping collins in like that is the equivalent to sumlin riding with kyle allen after 18 straight incompletions. kid is just so physically overmatched its not even fair.

Long transition pass to Tavario in traffic. What could possibly go wrong?
Posted on 1/28/17 at 12:24 pm to Uncle Gunnysack
Those "we want Collins" chants are brutal. Bad enough to be so overmatched, then to come out and hear WV fans chant for your return
