Sounds like it might be the players not getting it done and or the other teams schemes. I remember saying on this board how I thought the defense(players) looked a little soft in the few scrimmage videos I saw online. This could also be a slow start for the defense.

Gabe DeArmond ? @GabeDeArmond
Arizona State, Shipp’s DL, led the nation with 3.54 sacks/game last year. TCU was 35th with 2.46. #Mizzou was 43rd with 2.33.

Gabe DeArmond ? @GabeDeArmond
TCU, where #Mizzou DC DeMontie Cross was last year, was 54th in country in TFL FWIW

the D-Line players supposedly (rumor) aren't happy with the new system and defensive staff. If our players aren't happy it may be a long season for them and perhaps the fans.

If they aren't happy then maybe they should start playing better.

In order to succeed, you gotta be asked to do things you can do......That square peg can try harder than anything else in the universe but it ain't getting into that round hole.

I wouldn't go that far just yet. The non garbage time rush stats for the D weren't that bad.
Still not getting much pressure on passing plays though.

Exactly.... To go from hard hitting, blitzing type D, to this mamby pamby read and react bs, is like mixing water and oil.

Changing something that wasn't broke to begin with, was asinine anyway.

SemperFi is right; the past several of years of excellent Mizzou defenses were an attacking scheme; now they are trying to initiate a read and react scheme. Many Mizzou players are still trying to learn the scheme, terminology, and reads. The defensive efforts on the field thus far do not match the D-line and linebacker talent we have. I will be curious to see if Mizzou stays with the read and react if results do not improve this week. If we are as porous Saturday night as the last two weeks; Georgia will run through and around us all evening.

Mizzou does not have an historic program. But in recent years everyone has recognized D-Line Zou. Front 4 that is top notch and gets drafted. So not only is Cross changing something that wasn't broken, he is dismantling the only thing that made Mizzou a national brand.

Also the thing that got our LB's drafted was that the front 4 got so much pressure on the QB Gooden, Spoon and Brothers could just attack. I guess those days are gone too.

I just hope this isn't a d*ck measuring contest between BO and the Kul legacy. But for the life of me I can't come up with a logical reason to make the change. #Dlinezoureadandreact

Shipp has coached as many players that got to the NFL as Kul.
Last year ASU had more sacks and more TFLs and more havoc plays, than Mizzou. Give the players a few games to adjust to their reads.

In the scheme, the line is doing it's job most of the time.

Mizzou's defense last year had a WLB shedding blocks and flowing to the ball at a historic rate. This year's WLB is getting taken to the ground by single blocker and it doesn't matter if it's a lineman, Hback, or RB he is taking on.

That guy, in this defense, getting lost in the crowd is a problem and it is how he is reading the play.

NavyDuke nails it, there is a reason we have commits from 2 ILB and are still chasing 2 more for the 2017 class. LB play is vital for this team and the hybrid players Odom/Cross use.

Honestly, none of us know what this DL can do, because after rewatching the EM game they were about as vanilla as possible. That is not an excuse. Now I'd like to believe our base anything would still be able to drill the QB consistently, but last year's DL dominance was in part the creativity of the stunts that we have seen almost none of so far. Got to believe they have been holding back for conference play. If they aren't then I hold the right to redact this post

Selfishly speaking, can you blame them? In their minds they went from potential Shane Ray 1st round draft picks to players in a system that's asking them to surrender their aggressiveness.

I wonder if this is the style Odom ran in Memphis or if he's compromised himself by taking input from his assistants.

Can Terez Hall play WLB?

If so, let the dog eat.

I wonder why Mizzou redshirted lb Trey Baldwin since they need linebackers? This kid hits like a spud missile in high school. Maybe they feel like they need to teach him how to stop trowing his body at players and learn how to wrap up. Or he might be injured.

Odom ran a one gap 3-4 in Memphis.

Once the players get the checks at the second level, it will be a solid scheme. It takes the best of Cover 4 without giving up the flats.

So you see us fully moving to this scheme once he gets in more of his style of personnel?
