Take this circle jerk to the Bama board

Perkins
Curry
Stallings
DuBose
Fran
(Price)
Shula
Saban
This is why the rest of the SEC laughs when y'all say "We're the Crimson Tide, there'll be no dropoff when Saban retires, we'll just go out and hire another great HC".

The old guard way of thinking is gone now. We don't need a guy with 3 degrees of seperation from Coach Bryant to qualify for the job. Sorry for the news

quote:I remember arguing on another SEC board that the Bama braintrust was making a huge mistake by dumping Shula in '06, because I thought if they waited another year they would have a better shot at getting Saban away from the Dolphins. When it appeared they were set to hire Coach fRod, I was thrilled they'd made another in a long line of terrible HC choices.
We shoulda kept Shula
Then Jimmy Sexton made that fateful phonecall to Mal Moore, and the rest is history...

Or perhaps it's still there, revising history to tell themselves it was their idea to get Saban all along, and that they'll do an even better job next time.
BTW, who's running your AD now?
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Battle attended The University of Alabama on a football scholarship and enjoyed a successful playing career as a three-year starter at end for the Crimson Tide under legendary head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1960-62.

Alabama use to want other Alabama guys, now with Saban we know it doesn't matter just open up the checkbook and pay whoever is the best out there..
Plus before Alabama was a dumbster fire so no one would want that job.. when Saban retires you're being handed the keys to the kingdom..

Battle was a great hire. It's a bonus that he played at Alabama. Was there a better candidate available?

quote:Yeah, like you couldn't have done that when you hired any of the above names. Saban was the fourth guy you'd hired since Bryant retired who wasn't an Alabama guy. The other three ranged from mediocre (Curry) to lousy (Dennis) to catastrophically bad (Price). Besides, I doubt you could point to any HC in the country and categorically state that they are 'the best out there'.
just open up the checkbook and pay whoever is the best out there
quote:In the six seasons Stallings stepped down, Bama had won an NC and an SECC, been in the SECCG four times, had three top 5 finishes, been ranked in every single AP poll in the previous 5 years and had won 84% of their games.

And here's the brilliant young coaching talent to whom you handed the keys to the kingdom:

However, it should be pointed out that he was 70 years old when he got the gig. At that age, do you think he would have even been considered if he wasn't one of Bear's Boys?

I think it's safe to say that the current Alabama administration isn't going to blow off another hall of fame coach so they can hire another Bill Curry.

Tell you what...go back and look at what Battle was doing in the twenty years prior, then come back and ask the question again if you're serious.
