For years I have had insane nightmares, always associated with REM sleep. Dreams where I see everything around me, because my eyes are most likely opening and closing at a rapid rate, but those things around me turn into horrors.
Then the old maid keeps me from breathing or yelling. I'm there, but unable to react.
I know some of you know what I'm talking about.
Well, last night I had this dream, and within the dream I took control. I said "No", and I was finally able to get up. When I did that I left my bedroom and ran to the stairs where I found a blonde haired shithead kid smiling like the devil standing in my loft. He looked at me, took two steps and jumped over the banister. I ran to the banister to see where he went and instead of my family room I saw the craziest shite I've ever seen, a completely unexplainable view. Like I literally can't explain it, but it looked like nothing I could imagine on earth.
Then I turned around, walked back to my bedroom, and got in bed. I woke up looking at the same window I saw slam shut in my dream. Still open like it should be, wife and dogs were sleeping soundly.
fricking dreams man.

I generally can do 1 about every 2 weeks now. I started practicing trying to do them when I first started college, created a dream journal to learn my dream patterns and started doing "reality checks" all the time till they became a habit for me and then when I did them in my sleep I would realize I was dreaming and thus had started lucid dreaming.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has free time to read into and give it a try it honestly doesn't take a ton of effort to do.

Yeah. Never nightmare related or negative at all, but for a period when I was 16 or 17 I had them fairly often. I remember one time I realized I was dreaming so I made up the lottery numbers in my head, bought a ticket and then won the lottery and got hella laid. It was fricking cool. Then I was super bummed when I woke up even though I knew I was dreaming. I wish they still happened. Definitely an interesting experience.
It was right around the time Inception came out so I wonder if that influenced it.

What you're describing isn't lucid dreaming so much as sleep paralysis (though describing yourself taking control is more like lucid dreaming).
There's a freaking horrifying "documentary" called The Nightmare about it.
Just a warning that I know a few people who developed sleep paralysis after experimenting with lucid dreaming.

I recommend you watch the movie Nightmare on Elm Street 4: the Dream Warriors. It is a documentary that teaches how to take control of your dreams.
On a serious note, I have never experienced anything like this. I did have the same dream most nights for years and years where I was being chased all over neighborhoods and buildings by a big scary slasher film style killer, and could never get away. EVERY NIGHT. FOR YEARS. No fun. I would talk to professionals if it is a problem. I never did but it took years for it to stop.

I've had 2 lucid dreams in my life. I recognized something wasn't right, and I said, "I must be dreaming". I started doing all kinds of stuff-- flying, breathing underwater, etc.

Hydromet syrup caused me to lucid dream a few times. That's some powerful shite.
Traded my cough for the most wild dreams I've ever had

I'm so sorry you're having nightmares. That's a rough night.
I love dreams about being able to fly. I have achieved just a bit of success in lucid dreaming because I want to fly so much.
When I'm having a dream, I'm able to recognize an opportunity to leap up into the sky and fly to my heart's content. This has taken a lot of work and desire but it's totally worth it.
When I wake up I'm relaxed and happy. I'm always surprised that I can't actually fly, too. That's how real it seems in my dreams.

Tell us the truth, what kind of drugs are you on?

I'm a teetotaler. Always have been. No drugs, no alcohol. My imagination is probably overactive. I think that's probably because of my intense interest in science.

I'll occasionally do it but as soon as I realize what's going on I wake up. Sleep paralysis is the worst though. Some years ago I was on some sort of sulfa- medication and remember seeing little people dancing on my bedsheets, and I was unable to move. Also saw that devil monster looking thing just stand still in the corner of my room and smile.

Only if I haven't smoked weed in awhile. When you've been smoking/consuming, you almost always go into deep cycle sleep instead of rem sleep. If I go a week without smoking, my dreams become insanely vivid and crazy.
If you took a hit if indica right before bed, those crazy dreams will stop, and you'll probably get more restful sleep.

I have dreams where I realize I am dreaming and immediately wake up. I have over the past year, and reading too much on this message board, started to use it to do things. I think in the last week, I don't remember which night I realized I was dreaming and started jumping really high in the air. Then I jumped onto a 3 story building. Then I tried to fly but I don't remember actually flying in my dream. I guess I woke up. But it is possible. The only thing I was on was bud light and maybe a Jack and coke.

I've had sleep paralysis once. Last December. It was pretty horrible. Totally aware but totally trapped. Blech.

It happens to me quite a bit, and it's been happening since I was a child. Now that I understand the science it doesn't freak me out as bad.
The hallucinations are intense as frick.

There is nothing comparable to dream flying. Even sex.
I don't know why but it's the most exhilarating and freeing feeling I can imagine. If I could, I'd just stay asleep and fly forever.
I hope I'm dream flying when I die. I won't even care.

I wanna dream fly, man. But also worried if I start trying to lucid dream I'll end up like OP, and seeing scary weird shite instead through sleep paralysis.

I've had some demented dreams. I don't know why, but it's some really dark arse stuff straight from hell. Worse than anything I've ever seen in movies. If they were written into horror scripts, they'd probably put me away lol
