I just saw a really good documentary on him. It seemed like Mississippi State did him wrong. (And he actually stated this in the doc) He was the SEC Coach of the Year and then after the next season he said that they made him resign.
What are MSU fans thoughts on him and what he did for the program?

Mullen has done better than Croom did so how was he done wrong?
They fired a coach and got a better one. That's the business.

If he was that good of a coach, he wouldn't still be a NFL position coach but have got better opportunities

What a joke. MSU was repulsive under croom.

That SEC COY season was the only winning season in the Croom era (that consisted of shitastic offenses).

He went to one bowl game while at State and had one winning season. He was at State the same time Rich Brooks was at UK. For comparison's sake, Brooks inherited a team with scholarship reductions and probation yet still managed to take UK to four consecutive bowls and didn't have a losing season in his last four years at UK. I'd say State did what they had to do to better their program. Don't want to get fired/forced to resign, then win games.

The thing that sticks out to me about coach croom was when he first got there he got a really athletic qb (Omar Conner) and said we're going to make him a west coast qb in a west coast offense. It didn't work for shite but he was stubborn. After Conner they had Wesley Carroll and henig (not nearly the athletes Conner was) and said well we're going to simplify things and run some zone read. Then they take the best high school RB type player in the state of mississippi (derek pegues) in maybe a decade and they make him a DB. The guy made some puzzling decisions.
But I'll say this, he tried very very hard to ensure that he ran a clean program that produced quality young men. Hugh Freeze is sort of he anti-croom.

Never got old seeing a team get inexplicably "Croomed."

He also stated that he refused to fire any of his assistants and that he'd basically resign before he ever would.

His teams never had an offense ranked better than #100.
