quote:

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has released the name of the suspect behind Thursday morning's random shooting in Bristol, TN that claimed the life of an area newspaper carrier and injured three others, including a local police officer.

The TBI says 37-year-old Lakeem Keon Scott was armed with at least two weapons, an automatic-style rifle, a pistol and a large amount of ammunition, reports CBS statation WJHL in Tennessee.

According to the TBI, the victims were:

Jennifer Rooney ( A Bristol Herald Courier newspaper carrier) : Deceased after being shot driving in her vehicle on Volunteer Parkway.
Deborah Watts: In serious, but stable, condition at Bristol Regional Medical Center after being shot while working at the Days Inn.
David Whitman Davis: Received minor injuries at the scene after being injured by flying glass resulting from the gunfire.
Officer Matthew Cousins: Sustained a superficial wound to the leg. Was subsequently treated and released from BRMC.
Preliminary findings indicate Scott may have targeted people and officers after being troubled by recent events involving African-Americans and law enforcement officers in other parts of the country.

frick. This hits really close to home.

I live in an urban part of Knoxville in a fairly mixed area. Not exactly the news I was wanting to hear going into the weekend. RIP to the victims and their family

Sensationalism in the media has finally polarized people to deadly levels. Cops killing black people is a crime and the full force of the law should be used to prosecute those cops. But that issue is getting better every year, and even then, a black cop is more likely to kill a black person than a white cop is. The media and the BLM movement has already let their emotions decide differently, and has convinced people that they have to go to extreme measures to fix a problem that either doesn't exist, or is rapidly fixing itself.

He kind of has a good point

I wouldn't necessarily say it's rapidly fixing itself, but that's JMHO.

Probably won't get much coverage.

This is like after a natural disaster and people decide to loot instead of help their communities.

If there was ever a legitimate reason to raise taxes, it would be to double police officers' salaries so that very rigid hiring practices could be implemented. We must hire those men and women who don't bring destabilizing baggage to work with them.

Citizen safety is the first responsibility of any government whether it's federal, state or local. My word, when are we going to realize it's police officers and soldiers who are the most important people in our lives?

There should be no opposition to making these incredibly important jobs highly selective and very well paid. Hopefully something will come out of this latest crisis.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to raise taxes...

Not all of them are really feasible in America, but they're still legit reasons

nah, we don't need more taxes. We need to spend the money better. America doesn't have a revenue issue, its a spending issue. This the case for almost every gov. they spend like retards.

...And, they must do this with the understanding that they'll work nights, weekends, and holidays for a public that loathes their existence. Additionally, they'll get the pleasure of being the first on a crime scene involving children, and they get to join the "one of the highest divorce rates", "highest alcoholism rates", and "moderate suicide rate" clubs.

Honestly, I don't think it's the $ keeping the qualified candidates out, or retaining experienced Officers. I think it's the job (no offense to my LEO friends).

%100000 agreed. But my point is still valid. Governments need money to function. In some countries (not US) they need to raise taxes to better provide services.

the fed gov shouldn't have much money at all. I would rather pay local taxes. The gov has tons of money. They just spend it unwisely.

However, I'm all for making the tax code extremely hard to understand because its good for my bottom line.

I assume that it means a semi-automatic style rifle which would be tons of them. Or maybe a rifle that can be converted to automatic.
