Briles RE: Chafin on his pot arrest in March
quote:
“He’ll be back,” Briles said. “It’s his first offense in over a four-year period, and he had some bad judgment, just like a lot of us do. He picked a bad time to do it. … It’s about representing yourself, your family, the Baylor community and making wise decisions. He’s remorseful, but there will also be some punishment phases that go along with the remorse.”

Dolores Lozano says she wasn’t asked to be interviewed for Pepper Hamilton report
so that solves that. Even after the OTL report PH didn't interview her. So this is new info to Baylor. This is why you hire PH and I'd be really pissed this was missed if I was Baylor

And now Chafin responds. Again from Joe Schad

quote:
BREAKING: Former Baylor RB Devin Chafin responds to Dolores Lozano's claims. Says he never choked or kicked her. And Briles didn't know. MORE... Former Baylor running back Devin Chafin admits he "grabbed" Dolores Lozano "because she was fighting me" but claims he "never threw her to the ground, kicked her or choked her."
Chafin told me: "The story has been falsely constructed. No one knows the entire story. This girl is not who she claims to be." Chafin said he never discussed the situation with former head coach Art Briles, but did with current assistant Jeff Lebby. Lebby is Briles' son-in-law, but Chafin said he has no knowledge of Lebby sharing their conversation.
Chafin said Lozano did have direct contact with Lebby, who today declined immediate comment. "Coach Lebby told me to calm down," Chafin said. "I was emotional. I was crying. I needed to talk to somebody."
Chafin said a specific, personal event affecting he and Lozano's relationship led to a dramatic conversation that preceded the altercation. "I was never interviewed by Waco Police," Chafin said. "She would not leave my house. I honestly don't know what bruising I caused. But there were no criminal charges for a reason."
Chafin claims Lozano e-mailed Lebby for help getting a job in 2015 and that she has repeatedly continued to contact her.
Chafin says Lozano is motivated by "her desire to be in the spotlight - a part of the story. And, maybe to get back at me for ignoring her at times."
Chafin said he believes he was finally dismissed by Baylor not because of a marijuana charge, but because of these allegations. "Right now, they want to clear their names of anything related to assault," Chafin said. "People are looking at me like I abuse women and I don't. It's hard."
Chafin said it hurts to see what has happened at Baylor, with the President, Athletics Director and Head Coach all gone.
"The President and the football coach are not the people to be contacting in cases of serious assault," Chafin said. "Contact the police, not coaches. Go to the police."
Chafin said he plans to play at the FCS level this season. "I feel I have not done anything wrong," Chafin said. "My hopes of the NFL are hurt severely right now but hopefully not gone."

I've not much love for Baylor and I love piling on as much as the next guy, but this sounds believable to me. If it doesn't to you then you probably haven't been blessed with a crazy girlfriend/wife.

Its believable. How true it is is the only thing that matters.

Baylor official statement on the Chafin situation.
Full of sound and fury signifying nothing as far as I can tell. Someone must be paid by the word.
"We are committed to learning from the experiences of our students and former students as Baylor implements the improvements identified in the Pepper Hamilton recommendations. Because of the complex nature of dating and domestic violence, even when complainants report abuse to the police, their school and others, complainants may be reluctant to move forward with a campus or criminal investigation. In developing informed and sensitive responses, we must be open to understanding the unique dynamics of dating and domestic violence, including individual barriers and safety considerations, and to supporting our students as they evaluate their options. Further, we are actively taking steps to ensure all of our students understand and trust the full range of resources available to them."

yeah, it can be pretty hard in domestic abuse situations to really know what to make of things. There are two sides to every story.
That said, most victims of domestic abuse do not report it - or at least not the first instance. In this case, it seems she felt comfortable with his coach or his mom or her coach, and when they all ignored it, she eventually went to the police, but didn't want to press charges.
If you read his comments, maybe he told her it would ruin his NFL future (and therefore their future) if she did. I dunno.
Cops really should be required to investigate these things even if she doesn't press charges. They usually do honestly because it's commonly understood that battered women will often choose to not press charges.
The Title IX office is required to investigate. But of the multiple people at Baylor that knew of this, either none of them bothered to go thru the proper channels or the Title IX office failed in its duty.
That does not make him guilty or her side more compelling than his. An investigation merely provides a lens into the relationship that a bunch of quotes to Joe Schad won't.
Without being privy to whatever evidence is left, we don't know who's really telling the truth. But more than likely (as it's usually the case), both are spinning a story that casts themselves in the most favorable light. But the primary reason we don't know the truth here is because a bunch of adults who both of them trusted turned a blind eye to the situation or felt they, as coaches, were the proper people to mediate or counsel them.
Maybe a guy like Lebby just doesn't know much about domestic violence. Maybe he let his relationship with Chafin cloud his judgement and he believed one side of the story or felt Chafin didn't look like a wife beater (what do they look like really?).
But when combined with all the other information out there, this appears like another example of not wanting to know the truth because the truth might be bad for business.

Sure but when you screw up like Baylor has, part of the punishment is you open yourself up to opportunists. I have no sympathy for their situation.

BREAKING: Baylor true freshman WR Tren'Davian Dickson asks for release. Enrolled in Jan
Another member of their 2016 class is exiting.
FTR, if people want to talk about him potentially transferring to A&M, I'd suggest doing so in the recruiting thread rather than this one.

I missed this a few days ago, but it's relevant to the discussion I think:
LINK
quote:
Question: What schools in Texas stand to gain the most from Baylor's rapid decline?
Cowlishaw: None in the Big 12. I think it's bad for the conference. I don't think any one particular team -- Tech or TCU or Texas -- will get a disproportionate amount of their 2017 recruits. But maybe one will, I don't know how to predict that. Meanwhile the Big 12 isn't as strong on the field as it was a month ago, and that's a problem for the future.

Indeed.
baylor's rags-to-riches-to-pariah saga does damage to both themselves and the conference that's only beginning to be calculable.

I found this bit on a possible NCAA punishment.
LINK
quote:
Penalties similar to Penn State aren't expected. But CBS Sports has been told the NCAA does have a possible case through the traditional enforcement route. If players accused of/arrested for sexual assault didn't go through the school's disciplinary process (outside of athletics), that could be interpreted as extra benefits.

interesting comments further describing the Lebby role in the Chafin/Lozano situation in this KWTX report
LINK
So Chafin himself admitted to Lebby that he "laid hands" on her.
I'm sure Chafin is trying to protect himself and Lebby, but given Lebby levied a "punishment," it's pretty clear proper procedures were not followed.
Again, maybe the incident wasn't that big of a deal, but it's not Lebby's place to make that call.
