They beat Bart Starr with a wooden paddle until his back resembled a piece of raw meat. The quarterback was never the same again.

quote:

One of the most respected football players in the history of the game, and arguably one of the toughest, was hazed so badly while at the University of Alabama that it derailed his college career, disqualified him from military service and affected him throughout his 16 years with the Green Bay Packers.

quote:

"He was hospitalized at one point in traction," Cherry said.

Well, it was 70 years ago, but yea, things back then were a bit rougher than they are today.

Deflecting what? I hate that happened to him, but it was in the 50s. It doesn't go on any longer. Do you think the NCAA will investigate?

Ever watched Animal Houe? That was the culture back then.

With his stardom and fan respect, Bart Starr really missed an opportunity to do something about this culture by keeping quiet.

Have you seen our record during the 50's? There should have been more beatings.

Interesting Bama math. But you don't get credit unless you show your work

It used to be the initiation into A-Club, which is for former players and coaches only - this isn't some booster thing you can buy your way into.

A-club is a great organization that does a lot of good work today (and over the years) and keeps their members informed on one another so they can help when needed - two examples would be the support they provided to Siran Stacy when he lost his family, and the way this group reached out to one another about Stabler's passing and help for the family before media knew he was gone.

The initiation back then was wrong. Everyone knows it, acknowledges it, and it's been changed for decades.

Dude, you got us on that one. I mean you exposed Bama. Things will never be the same.

BTW way, did this happen before or after the Berlin wall went up?

Why would it get whacked? It's an interesting story involving an SEC team and an SEC legend.

Yeah, Bama doesnt get to claim that HOF quaterback. Starr did well in spite of playing for a bunch of thugs at Bama.

He earned his first varsity letter as a freshman in 1952, so my assumption was that was when he got whacked around.
