Very simply, you can't compete year in/year out with a gimmick, option offense (that most teams have figured out by now) and an inconsistent defense that is bottom tier of the SEC. Also, Auburn hasn't had a truly good quarterback since Cam.

shitty luck
the Auburn offense is predicated on QB play - you got a QB that everyone agreed was perfect for the system and he just..... imploded
you can't predict that

it's fun to troll Auburn and all but it's not a gimmick
it's a system of opening up running lanes by making the defense respond to a QB that can gash them with the run and also throw the ball
without a QB that a defense has to fear Auburn's offense doesn't work but that doesn't make it a gimmick

Nick Marshall was incredible. He ran that offense incredibly well.

Marshall was very good for that offense. No he wasn't a great passer, but he ran that offense very well. It was their defense in 2014 that let them down.

Jacobs, according to Auburn people I know who are pretty well connected inside Tigers Unlimited, is just a total disaster in terms of management. He runs the thing like the old coach AD's of the 1980's ran the departments, except for the departments now are 10x bigger and 10x richer than they were then. You can't have a guy who doesn't know how to run a Fortune 1000 company running your athletic department.
In terms of coaching hires, he has been pretty hit or miss. The Chizik thing won a national title, but any objective review of that hire was that it was terrible (at the time, and then in the longrun). His baseball hires have been awful (I think Thompson was a great hire, though). Everyone from Oklahoma openly discussed what a dickhead Galloway was, and they basically willingly let him go, but Jacobs was so obtuse he ignored that. The Malzahn hire was a risk, but even if it falls apart this year I don't think that was an awful hire.
He has also made some great hires. Meyers has taken Auburn from a middle of the pack SEC softball program to an elite one in what, 3 years? Butch Thompson was a very good hire. Pearl is going to end up being a very good hire wins and losses wise, and he has already infused energy into a basketball program that hasn't had energy, outside of short spurts, ever.

Truth is AU has gone the cheap route when hiring a coach. Bama had similar issues until Saban. AU would go out and find an up and coming coach at a bargain rate, give him a big raise then watch as complacency sets in. You notice AU has never had a coach leave for another job.

I disagree that it's a gimmick. It's how football was played generations ago. The quarterback didn't pass it, he ran it. Auburn problem recently has been defense.

Nick Marshall was not an incredible quarterback. He could run the ball well, but passing was never a strong suit for him. Go watch the first drive of the 2013 National Championship game - missed a wide open Ricardo Louis on a pass that would have gone for a touchdown. Could have been the difference in the game as FSU only won by 3.

They get too obsessed with keeping up with Bama.

I agree with this. The "gimmick" is the speed of it and going so fast that the defenses can't adjust.
Auburn's base offense is probably the most old school in the whole damned conference.

How has Bama been with their coaching hires besides Saban . Remember Rich Rod was Bama's first choice.

He was hit or miss accuracy wise, but he has a giant arm that stretched the field and opened up their running game.

Yeah gimmick was probably the wrong word to use. Should have said "slightly predictable offense"

I know your secondary wasn't up to par in 2014, but I don't know if people realize he threw for 456 against Alabama and set school records for passing and total offense.

Ever or recently? I think we hit a home run with Avery Johnson, I think Curry is slowly turning around women's basketball (she inherited a steaming pile of cow dung), Saban is obvious, Gaspard is a joke. I think that Anthony Grant was considered by everyone in basketball to be the best available mid-major guy and a future star, so I don't really fault Mal there. Also, Rich Rod was not our first choice, he was our choice when it became clear Saban wasn't going to budge. Rich Rod was the safety pick.
I don't think Mal or Battle are particularly great with coaching hires. Mal and Battle are and were, however, as good as anyone at management and fundraising.

Exactly. Honestly, his passing was a lot like Blake Sims. They both had big arms and threw great deep balls, they were just both not very experienced when things went longer than the first read and everytime they threw across the middle you hoped for the best.

Too many programs around us with more natural advantages.
What programs and what advantages?
You're almost the same distance from Atlanta as Athens.
You're almost the same distance from Mobile as Tuscaloosa.
You're significantly closer to Tallahassee than both Tuscaloosa and Athens.
Geographically, you're in great position to access two of the most fertile recruiting areas in the nation. I'd say that's a natural advantage.
You've won SEC and national titles more recently than both Florida and Georgia.
Historically, you're on a par with both UF & UGA in terms of conference and national titles and have won them more recent success than both of those programs.
Your facilities (both athletic and academic) are top notch.
Sorry, but Alabama is the only program around you that could be considered to have more natural advantages - and even then that advantage is really only their tradition of success based on a string of highly successful coaches.

Selective memory. Saban was asked first, but a lot of programs get turned down by Pro Coaches all the time. The truth was Rich Rod was someone they wanted. You can not hide from the Shula, Price, Fran, Dubose and Curry hires.
