Several years ago (Tubverville was Auburn's coach) the state of Alabama threatened to shut down high school football over financial concerns.
It was just a threat to get new taxes passed.
The taxes passed and football was saved.
I would love to see a State call a governor's bluff and say no to the taxes.

1. ^ This guy gets it.
2. The people in here talking about LSU shutting down the athletic program to save money are terribly uninformed. LSU athletics GIVES MONEY BACK TO THE UNIVERSITY ANNUALLY.
3. Anyone who believes the state would shut down the entire system is a special kind of stupid. The smaller state schools would be the first to go.

People like you who believe this are just as stupid as the governor.

I'm interested to see if JBE shows up to the basketball game Saturday and if they show him on the scoreboard like they have been doing. The last couple home games since he took over office he went to the game and he was put on the video screen. The reaction was kind of quiet.

He just threatened to shut down the school and take TOPS from 75% of the student body.
I'd imagine he's going to stay as far away from LSU's campus as possible. If not, he's a dumbass.

I love a good laugh at LSU fans just as much or more than anyone but this is so dumb

You are right, but a little part of me hopes that he does show up just to see what the reaction would be

I was told by a professor at LSU that they are looking at eliminating summer classes entirely, some layoffs and increasing faculty course loads.
Sounds rough.

I think a nice STTDB would be in order. JMO though

LSU's athletic department gives money back to the school. TAF handles the financials--even the coaches' salaries come out of private funds

And no professor ever wanted to work there again. The end.

Its kind of a drop in the bucket, though.

Not saying that. But he has been there for a long time and it did not sound like a good situation. He is in a position where he can just retire.

What you republicans are failing to mention is your GOP governor left the state in 500 million dollar debt this year.and its projected to be 1 billion dollars this upcoming fiscal year. Because of our state Constitution, we have to have a balanced budget. Therefore, fundings has to be cut to several programs. JBE didn't create this problem, he's trying to solve it. Its just like Bush created the problems for the country and Pres Obama solved them.

Other state schools that pulled this BS are experiencing major brain drains. See Wisconsin, Florida State, and North Carolina for a few examples. Next up: LSU.
Oh well, at least we cracked the USN&WR Top Tier for a couple years before our precipitous decline.

Most people on here are looking at the small picture. Forget athletes, forget football because turning the state into a welfare state and raising taxes to much will cause a mass exodus out of the state and I am talking about not only football players but the people that do have the money and they want to keep it by seeking refuge in another state. La has a big problem that may take some austere money tightening policies to start the cure. Raising taxes will just kill the state. Not in a literal way but....just saying.

Austerity measures are what got us into this mess, FWIW. Why do you think the budget was cut so dramatically?

He's not threatening to shut down football, but if classes end on April 30th when LSU is officially poorer than UTk, then the players will not be eligible. This is a little more serious than football. The idiot Republican Gov Jindal destroyed the state financially.
Thank God we elected a Dem. to try to solve this complete cluster frick.
