I think that just about everyone assumes when we entered the SEC, it would take at least three to four years for us to be competitive. Sumlin lead a team that has now competed every year, had a winning record every year and is consistently in the national conversation.
Sumlin is a good coach. He is a winning coach. The facts bear that out. Are we perfect and where I want to be? Hell no. It beats my initial expectations when first we entered the conference though.
We are recruiting well. It is true we had a down year this year, but I think that has more to do with some shady tactics from sippy than anything else. Next year all signs point to a better recruiting haul and I think the after another losing season, chuck will be out of Austin.
So those are some of the reasons why I support him. I think that he is a good, proven and focused coach. I don't get caught up in the rumor mills and bullshite that many of you do. I don't have to because I know what is true and what is conjecture and bullshite.
I also don't have a bruised pussy every time that an 18 year old kid makes a decision I don't agree with.

Sumlin has never won a title of any kind as a head coach.
Even in Conference USA, with Case Keenum, he went 0-2 in title games, including Houston's best team ever getting raped by Larry Fedora in the CUSA title game.

I sound like a broken record I've posted this multiple times here and on Texags but yes he absolutely needs to be gone if he doesn't win 9+
We have made the commitment to being a top tier program, we have spent the money to improve stadium, facilities, etc. what happened in the past DOES NOT FRICKING MATTER, it is the past. To look and say "well, he's done better than RC in a harder conference" or whatever is not a reason to keep an under performing coach.
This is about the present and future, and a guy who earns 5 million a year better not average 7-8 wins a season, period. I don't expect to be Alabama and compete for the conference every single year, but it would be nice to compete for those very now and again too.
At the end of the day Sumlin is not earning his paycheck, he was supposed to be a good recruiter and now even that has failed him. As in any other job in America, what happens when your performance is subpar? You get fired. He's got one more season to right the ship, that's all there is to it.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

We have progressively gotten worse over his four years with apparently a more talented roster. Not a good combo.
Everything else aside, past comparisons, tougher competition, etc., this is what really matters. He's not trending in the right direction even with a stacked roster. Recruiting does not matter without development and that's exactly why I'm not getting bent out of shape about our class this year.
He needs to turn the ship around this year.

lets be real, Sumlin doesnt hold the keys to his future
His hiring of Mazzone holds the key to his future. Chavis will field a good defense, the question is will Mazzone coach up what he has to work with and game plan well enough to win 9-games.
Sumlins future is in Mazzones hands

The thought of having to publicly get into a bidding war with the teasips when we both fire our coach next year makes me feel uneasy

Sumlin has yet to show he can develop players beyond their high school peak.

If the reports are that we've already sounded out Herman, and been told he's waiting on the UTx job, then that makes things easy. We just say we tried a non p5 UoH coach and it didn't work out, so we're not going back to that well with the next hire. Or, if we hire someone like Morris, should he do well at SMU, we can say the Aggie son was our first choice anyway.
The trick is to not get duped by Herman into thinking he's really available, while he is actually holding out for UTx. Admittedly, there is reason for concern we won't read the tea leaves correctly.

Which is why I never really disliked that Sumlin extension despite how it handcuffs us today.

Why does the 5 million upset everyone? We don't pay that in 2012, USC would have. I don't see why everyone doesn't get that.

I'm fine with it, at the time we believed he was worth it
and for our next coach we may have to pay more and have no idea if we'll get a return on that investment
thats how coaching hires go

I think most of us are cool with it. USC taking our coach then would have confirmed second tier program status.
The biggest problem is the fact that Sumlin's buyout can't be paid out over years like most buyouts.

Up until their title year in 2005 Mack Brown had never won a conference title either. It took him 22 years as a HC and when he finally did they won the whole damn thing.
So to act like b/c Sumlin hasn't done it yet means he likely never will is pretty stupid.

Yes it was Sumlin's fault that Keenum uncharacteristically threw some really bad picks and that their best WR dropped multiple wide open TD passes.
I bet you didn't even watch that game did you?

I don't know. Losing a coach to LSU or Georgia or some school like that might do it, but USC is one of those "blue-bloods". I think we still would have been viewed as a top 15 program, just not top 5 like USC.

Maybe in a vacuum, but then hiring a coach less prestigious than Charlie (even if he did better than Charlie since then) would have sealed the deal.

Let's say he gets fired. Who do you think is going to want to come here? What big name coach will want this job? Dont' say Herman. How is he a proven coach at the SEC level? That would be the same as when we took Sumlin. Success at UH level isn't the same. I say we give Sumlin a 2-3 more years and see if he can right the ship. Hopefully he's learned from the mistakes.

I think we could have gotten someone pretty good, though I don't recall the available candidates.
Hell, maybe we get Bert!

I won't, because he's undoubtedly going to UTw, where he'll win at least one national championship.
