Paul Johnson was a popular choice for some reason.

Rich Rod and Spurrier.

I think folks don't realize how close we were to pulling Spurrier from USC. My girlfriend at the time worked at Ol Colony Golf Course and they "unexpectedly" closed the course to the public one Monday. She was in the clubhouse and recognized Spurrier along with Mal Moore and mentioned there were some other Alabama people. There was talk that a contract had been signed on the course, but something obviously (and fortunately) fell through.

Glad we got Saban and 4 out of the last 7 national championships.

for some reason.
Because Bear ran the triple option in the 70s.

Gotta recapture those glory days. There are other AD's - like Michigan and USC - who have alum/retread syndrome even worse. I'm glad that didn't gain too much traction.

Wake Forest’s Jim Grobe easily outpaced Rutgers’ Greg Schiano for AP coach of the year honors....

...I should note that both are high on the list of candidates in the prolonged search to replace Mike Shula at Alabama. Either of them would be an outstanding choice, as would Navy’s Paul Johnson.

Oh, ok, I guess I should be sending my annual Thank You card to Mrs. Rodriguez instead of Rich.

Nothing right now, but he will be my answer to this question in 10 years when some yahoo asks who LSU was looking at hiring before they ended up keeping Les Miles, who then went on to win 4 national championships in the 2nd half of his 20 year career at LSU.

When did we pursue Mike Riley? Before or after Shula?

Because some elements in our fanbase made the leap in logic that if we ran the triple option, we would replicate the success of the 70s. The "we need to go back to real men football. Only pansies throw the ball. Nuff said" crowd.

I wanted Mora Jr but his name wasn't even being talked about. They should hire me.

After Fran/Mike Price: Jim Levitt, Tom Coughlin(would have come), Sylvester Croom, Gene Stallings coming back. Pickins were slim

After Shula: RichRod, Paul Johnson, Spurrier

Mal was after Saban, he got a call from his agent who said there was a chance he wanted back to college football. They did the kibouki dance for awhile. Someone on the board of trustees got cold feet and Rich Rod came into the picture. This happened at the football meeting in Florida. Sexton got Mal on the phone and wanted to know wtf was going on. RR wanted to go home and tell his team by. He went home and the president made him a great offer. His wife heard F Bomb called her a big haired slut.
After that Mal and Sexton talked some more.
Mal went all in and flew to Miami, talked to Miss Terry and the rest is history.

Give Finebaum some credit. He knew something was cooking with Saban and played it coy just enough to make me think Bama stood a good chance at getting him. I listened to him none stop during that span(when work didn't interfere lol) and it was a great time to have hope. And then it really happened!!

It is still my thoughts that someone within the Alabama family contacted Finebaum and had him discredit Coach Rodriguez or his family or do whatever was necessary to have him change his mind about coming to Alabama. The inside workings of the Bama athletic department knew Coach Saban was coming, but first they had to rid themselves of Coach Rodriguez.

For this reason they should erect a statue of Finebaum outside BDS along with the coaches. Finebaum saved the Alabama football program.

I predicted Saban would be Alabama's coach that October before Shula was even fired. I know, I am awesome.
