Why are there such huge discrepancies in rankings between recruiting services?

You can find guy being ranked in the top 20 by rivals and in the 200s by scout. ESPN and 247 will have them somewhere in the middle. I know that the best way to look at it is with 247's composite, but some of those differences are pretty ridiculous

Because they are all guessing
And because they are lazy and piggyback off each other too often

Recruiting rankings are all for entertainment. They have busts in the top all the time and they have kids they barely even looked at who blow up. The sheer volume of recruits is ridiculous. Plus they all play against different levels of talent in their state. Then you have discrepancies in talent state vs state. This makes evaluating kids very difficult.
Plus it takes more than a fast 40yd dash time and size to be a good D1 football player which is hard to evaluate in general much less when you need to evaluate thousands of kids across the nation.

Watching highlight videos is more telling than star gazing with the recruiting services. Food for thought..

What events they go to. For example ESPN didn't see some summer camps where Willie Allen struggled. 247 was there and dropped him accordingly

In all honestly seems like 247 is the best however to get the free publicity ESPN is the best on signing day.

Politics... guys go to certain camps over others and as a result, recruiting services will show favoritism.

Along with what everyone else has said, the all American games make a difference as well. ESPN will rate guys that play in the under armour game higher, on average.

Same reason that 3 stars often outplay 5 stars.

Depends on the highlight video. Even a high level FCS athlete will look good to great on a highlight video. Especially if he's playing against the lowest division in his state. highlights are just the best plays from their season. Going and watching a full game in person is usually the best evaluation method which is what a lot of recruiting guys do to come up with their star rating.

Trying hard not to be biased here, but we have a fringe 5 star commit, DK Metcalf. Saw him play in the MS state championship, kid looked like any 5 star I've ever seen

Metcalf then went and had a pretty bad week at the AA game. Metcalf has always been really inconsistent, thus the 4 star rating. Athletically, he is a monster.

Because there are 100 times more 3* players. And it's not that often.

I use to think 247 was the best evaluators but then Barton Simmons told me last year that they moved one guy down from a 4* because he was going juco and they moved a guy who was a 3* into his spot because they wanted a certain amount of 4* linemen and he deserved it because he would qualify.
I use to think Rivals was dumb for generally not ranking kids as high who didn't attend their camps but at least they are trying to go off of what they've seen in person.

Right now all the sites got behind big money. Rivals partnered with Yahoo, ESPN is ESPN, Scout got in with Fox Sports and 247 got in with CBS.
247 has the best thing going for them with the Composite Rankings. They take the "average" of the 4 major recruiting services to come up with the Composite score for the player.
I think the next big thing for any of the sites to do is to buy MaxPreps or Hudl to get the stats/highlight films connected to the players that are supplied by the schools/coaches/team moms/handlers.

Because you're giving them too much credit?

Each service uses a different dart board.
