I wish there was some major historical event in 1945 to put this into perspective ....

It was the beginning of the Poll Era, what could be more significant than that?

Ole Miss's 38-0 win over #3 Tenn was in 1968. So not biggest since 1945

I can assure you, without reservation that, even though it was by a larger margin, Michigan State will get over their big game shutout by Alabama much faster than LSU will get over their big game shutout by Alabama on 1/9/12.

Should have been 2nd largest. I mistyped. Thanks for the correction but I'm going to bed and too lazy to edit the title.
I just repeated what ESPN put on screen aside from being second largest.

Only 2 top 3 teams have been shut out in the post season in the last 40 years. Both by Bama.

Sure they will. They aren't in the same division or conference and likely won't play Bama for 5 or 10 years. LSU hasn't beaten Bama since then and each year their season goes in the shitter after that game.
