But did he really say anything?

Dave Matter Interview

Is there someone who can translate HCBO's answers to these questions??

quote:

Q: I get asked this twice a day so I’ll ask you once. Was (defensive line coach ) Craig Kuligowski under consideration for the staff or was he not the right fit?

A: Yeah, I think anytime you go in and there’s change, to get the right fit for who you’re hiring and who you’re bringing in, you want to allow (the head coach) some flexibility in having an opportunity to put the staff together. Craig has done an unbelievable job of coaching the defensive line. I’d venture to say he’ll have a great opportunity to do that at that position or possibly a coordinator spot.

Q: Pat Ivey’s not coming back as your strength coach. Was that your decision or did it come from the administration?

A: Mack Rhoades has done a great job through this process working together but allowing the head coach to help and make the decisions on the assistant coaches and the head strength coach. Pat’s done a great job over how many years he’s been at Missouri. Pat’s worked himself into a role that he’s a doctor and is a talented guy and will be successful where he ends up.

Q: There’s always turnover in a recruiting class with verbal commitments after a coaching change. Is there any message you can give to Mizzou fans who are saying, ‘Oh my god, they lost another commitment!’

A: It happens every year. If you look at what’s happened at Georgia, what’s happened at Miami, what’s happened to everyone that’s had a head-coaching change and even places that haven’t had head-coaching changes. … This has happened every year, but people don’t always see it. I’ve lived it for 12 years every day fighting to keep a kid committed. They may decommit, but there’s a long time between now and the first Wednesday in February. I feel very strongly that on that Wednesday we’re going to have a class that everyone’s pretty excited about.

Right after I got the job I think we had two guys jump in right away and commit. In the last couple days there have been four or five who opened it up but (said), ‘Missouri’s still my No. 1.’ That’s recruiting. Unfortunately a lot of times there are reservations not commitments. That’s the nature of the game. That’s the nature of what we do. At the end of this recruiting cycle we’ll have guys who ultimately fit what we want culturally, academically and athletically on Mizzou’s campus.

Pretty much.

He's already done a good job of adapting to HC. Answer a question without even really answering it.

Q1. No I wanted my own guy.

Q2. No I wanted my own guy.

I hope he knows what he's doing - two of our best coaches

So much for expecting a straight answer during future pressers.

Holy crap those are the biggest non-answers I've seen in a long time.

He will be great at pissing me off during his tenure by dodging questions.

Here is a video of an interview scrum before the Braggin' Rights game. LINK

Does anyone else sense the hackles on BO's neck raising up when the Kuligowski question (about halfway in)?

It'll be interesting to see if Kul accepts a job that puts him in a position to gain a measure of revenge.

I didn't want coach Kuligowski back because he would get all the credit for the d-line and I want my own puppet in that position. Coach K and Dr. Ivey were too well liked and that would take away my glory.

Pat Ivey was let go bc of his involvement with the protest. Coach Kul and BO didn't get along. Can't make them work together if they don't want to. Coach Kul's replacement should be just fine. He has turned out some beasts as well. The big question is replacing Pat Ivey. That's gonna be tough

It doesn't have to be that cynical. I want a new coach to be comfortable with his staff. Odom obviously wasn't comfortable with Kul. That's ok as long as you bring in someone as good. I see no reason to believe that the people Odom has brought in to coach those positions will be a significant downgrade. I've been pleased with his hires and decisions for position coaches.

Agreed. I love what he's done thus far. And even with the Ivey dismissal, I think he's trying to change the culture into one that more business-like with a clear delineation of command.

Not sure if folks caught it, but Dave Matter said in print (chat) and on radio that many of the AA players viewed Ivey like he was the head coach. Even if it was a slight exaggeration, I can see why Odom would be proactive in rooting out any potential team splitting influences when starting from scratch.

I hate to lose Kul and Ivey, but the overall staff could be better for it.
