What the hell is the attraction to Kirby Smart?

Yes he has done an incredible job as the DC at Bama, but he also works under a defensive genius and has had incredible talent. He is a major player for several job openings and I just do not understand it. The last big name defensive guy who had been mentored under Saban was Muschamp and that flopped. Enlighten me please

I don't understand it either but it looks like he's our new HC

spent way longer under Saban than Champ.
More composed.
Really Champs undoing was the fact that he made retarded OC hires.

Georgia is a pretty great job to have as your first one. Probably a top 10 job in the country.

For the Georgia folks it's his ties to the school. For everyone else I guess they assume he has something to do with the defensive success at Bama. He could just be holding the cue cards for Nick so I don't know. But he gets a rub either way for being there.

He has coached under Saban for a decade. He has learned what it takes to run a championship program from the best in the business. Of course any team that takes him is taking a risk as no one knows how he will ultimately do since he has no head coaching experience, but surely you can see why ADs would be willing to take that risk?

I would tend to think he's learned a thing or two from said defensive genius and he'd have incredible talent at UGA.
There's always a risk involved with first time HCs.

Because every defensive coordinator is EXACTLY like every other defensive coordinator in organizational, interpersonal and administrative skills. They all are identical as far as recruiting, game planning and dealing with boosters.

Nothing is ever a certainty. But, Smart is likely to be a great HC. He has years under Saban, is, by all accounts a great recruiter. And, for Georgia in particular, it seems like that would be his dream job.
I think if GA gets the Houston coach, they are heading down the Tenn road... What I mean by that is you will get an up and comer who will probably bolt when his dream job (Texas as opposed USCw) comes open.

most HC's had their start as an OC or a DC. So at some point the right job will open up that he has interest in. It is hard to argue with our defensive #'s since he has been the DC. And please dont say it is all NS. NS gives KS credit for the defensive game plan and running the plan.

He's a terrific recruiter and has been the right hand man in the running of the most successful sports organizations in the last ten years.

He's been under the overlord's tutelage for a long time. That's enough to take a look at him.

The hope that some of Sabans DNA has rubbed off on him.

His wife seems like a very nice lady.

The visor- He could be the next Spurrier or Malzahn. Wearing the visor is the first step obviously.

Herman gets passed over by uga and gets another year of seasoning. Les canned in 2016 and we are golden.

Yeah...we Vandy fans shouldn't be talking. Our current HC was hired on basically the same premise as Kirby would be hired, and though he was very good at his job, Kirby (as you said) has even better credentials, given who he's studied under.
The assumption is that Kirby would hire a great OC to cover the flaws, something Muschamp never did (and something we need to do.)

I don't get it either. He has always been under Saban. I don't see why anyone top 25 job would hire him. I would even take Kiffin over him.

He looks like every UGA fan alive.
