Question for LSU fans (and others) re: last kickoff

Bama's last possession had me scratching my head from an LSU perspective. With only one timeout Les could not call a TO. That said, down by only 14 with 9:18 left, why not onside kick then? Really looking for knowledgeable football answers as it would have been a conundrum for me. Certainly pin them deep and play field position was considered but in hindsight it seems, and proved to be, too risky.

Who usually can milk the last 9 minutes of a game?
That was unexpected.

Probably was thinking we can hold them to a 3 and out which would burn 3 minutes. LSU can get the ball back with 6+ to go. Maybe quick score and then onside kick.
But like previous poster noted, never expected a 9 minute drive

We stop them ---> we score ---> we recover an onside kick ---> we're in a position to have the last possession of regulation down by 7 with around two minutes left. I'm sure that was the thought process but Bama was the better team and it didn't work out like that. If you can't understand that thought process with 9 minutes left then I'm not sure what to tell you

How is kicking it deep and playing field position too risky? Too risky relative to an onside kick? If that's what you're comparing it to, imo onside kick recovery percentages aren't great enough to warrant that call at that point in the game when you KNOW the offense's upcoming objective. But that's my opinion on whether percentages are high enough, which will obviously differ from person to person.

quote:Seriously? You kick it deep, the other team gets it around the 20 generally, and they can get move the ball 30, 35 yds and you can still force a punt (no points given up). 9 minutes is a LOT of time, so you figure you get the ball back with maybe 5 and a half left if you give up 1 first down. You then have to pass downfield to score, the one thing LSU was able to do (and that wouldn't take a lot of time).

Onside kick risks giving Bama the ball around the 50 or inside. Needs just about 10-15 yds to score if they take another long FG, or punt to pin you inside the 20 (probably around the 10). In that case, if you don't recover the onside kick, game is basically done then and there.

I'm thinking it had to do with the fact that we just had a scoring drive, and although it wasn't much of a "drive", it was the longest our defense had been off the field for a while when you throw in TV timeouts on the change of possession and after the score. I could see both sides of it. We were very close to getting the ball back around mid field after a punt, but alas...another third and long converted. The D was just gassed. But in hindsight, onside kick would have been the best option. 20/20 and shite, you know?

I'd love to see a different angle of that kickoff landing. I thought it hit the sideline.

Kicking off and hoping Alabama turns it over deep in their own territory again was probably more likely to happen than LSU recovering an onside kick AND driving it the length of the field against a defense that had shut them down for 3.5 quarters.

It was the right decision to kickoff. Also, the players believe Drake fumbled on the 5. Les didn't want to burn his last timeout or something.
