Would Sherman's offense work with our personnel

Looking back at that offense, it worked. The play calling and game management was for crap under Sherman. However, the offense worked. Could something like that be implemented with our personnel?

No. You need an OL that can dominate at the point of attack and RB with the explosiveness to take the ball to the second level. We have neither

If you think back to that offense we had a pretty nasty OL (I think our entire 2011 line plays in the NFL now?) an NFL QB in Tannehill and a solid college back in Cyrus Gray

The irony of it all is that the personnel we had in 12 was perfect for what we're trying to transition to, and the personnel we have now is more suited for actually running the air raid.

The whole reason the air raid is used is to account for OL talent deficiency. Now we're taking our worst OL in 5 years and trying to move away from the air raid.

Was discussing this with friends during the clusterfrick Saturday night

Would be interesting if we could have kept up Sherman's offensive line recruiting and development. From a scheme perspective, I like Sherman's offense a lot more.

That is what I was thinking as well. Are we facing a Fran after 77-0 type of panic? I mean he completely changed scheme in order to try and fix things. Is Sumlin making the same mistake? Or are we in a position to pull off a change like we are trying

We need the OL to improve quite a bit for this scheme to work IMO. Christensen doesn't deserve the full blame for the OL's issues this year because he inherited a poorly coached unit, but they have been bad.

Sherman's first half of the game 2011 offense was the best we've ever had. It absolutely steamrolled fools.

In the second half of the games when he abandoned the 100 yard running games we had already put up, not so much.

But yeah, as originally said, we had the personnel in 2012 to run what we're trying to do now. I like Sumlin, but dang, he wasted that o-line and running backs.

Back to the OP, no we don't have the personnel to run Sherman's offense. Sherman created an elite, elite o-line and recruited great college RBs. Right now we have one "meh" RB and a shoddy o-line.

We don't have the OL to run any kind of offense

Sherman's offense was pretty underwhelming, considering the talent we had at hand. Really lacked explosive plays.

In 2011, we were 38th in plays of 20+ yds (not terrible, but somewhat underwhelming considering pace/talent) and only 75th in plays of 30+ yds.

For reference, our crappy offense in 2015 ranks 38th and 67th respectively.

38th is pretty amazing when you consider that we only played half as many minutes as the rest of the teams in D-1.

So basically, Sherman's offense produced as well as the crappy offense Spav is putting out there.

Without the help of an NFL offensive line.

So I'm getting 5.08 yards/rush, and if you remember, we lost CMike maybe 6 or 7 games into the year, and then Cyrus after game... 10? So we were probably closer to 5.2 when CMike and Cyrus were running.

Let's not gloss over the difference between 5.2 yards/rush and 4.2 and 4.1 yards/rush. That is a cavernous gulf, especially as that stat represents our performance against good teams too. This year, we've basically rushed for close to 6ypa against crap teams and 3 or less against good teams. Just a sample of the first few:

Oklahoma State: 6 ypa
Arkansas: 7.1 ypa... on 381 yards!?! Wait, how the frick did we lose that game? Seriously, how the frick did we lose that game!? Oh yea, we gave up more passing yards than a Mike Leach secondary.
Tech: 4.5 ypa
Baylor: 5.9ypa

Here are some rushing stats this year:
ASU: 4ypa (3.3ypa for Carson. Kyler inflated the stats big time).
Arkansas: 3.3ypa
Mississippi St: 4.3
Alabama: 1.3 (3.5 for Carson, though we hardly gave him the ball so it doesn't matter)
Ole Miss: 2.1

Honest question: why is average yards/play a meaningful statistic?

Example. The average temp for today is 78. But it happens to be 106 today. Today's temp may adjust the overall average to 79. But it doesn't change the fact that it's 106 TODAY. And today is the day the football game is lost. Even though, on average, we shouldn't have lost today.

Its probably the best 'non-advanced' stat you can find for measuring the strength of an offense or defense. Especially now that tempo has gotten out f control.

It can be a little wonky if the sample size is too small (say for a single game), but over a full season, it tells you a whole lot. Not everything, but it's better than just about any other stat
