Okay, at the risk of being down-voted all to hell here, WHY is Widespread Panic such a big deal? I've heard a little of their stuff (admittedly, not much) and I just never cared for it. I feel like this is total stoner music. Amirite?

They are a jam band that has genuine Southern roots and play a lot of Southern rock as well. They all attended UGA and formed in Athens and attract folks like myself who love southern rock as well as stoners who are there to party but also love the improvisation that the band delivers. I'm relatively young and didn't go to UGA when they peaked around 1998-2002 but they captivated college aged crowds with their tunes. One of their founding members, Michael Houser was the lead guitarist and wrote many of their songs, died in 2002 of pancreatic cancer and was an icon to the bands movement that many people who saw him live fell in love with. Honestly, they are all just a bunch of good ole boys playing good music that happen to be influenced by the town and school that I love so it is easy for me to really relate and enjoy their music.

Not really sure how to answer this question, but I guess because a lot of people like their music. Shows are a riot. Not for everyone though for sure.
