What is it going to take?

Why can't Auburn field a decent defense? Ted Roof, BVG, Ellis Johnson, and now Muschamp all have failed to turn it around. 500 yards to Kentucky is pathetic with an extra week to prepare. Auburn's defensive talent looks awful, but yet the recruiting rankings say they should be among the most talented teams in the country. I doubt all 4 of these coaches were incompetent. They've all had success other places.
What is it really going to take for Auburn to return to the salty defensive play they had under Tubbs?

For fricks sake...it's because of their offense. How many times does it have to be said.
Tubbs was smash mouth

The offense, plain and simple. Auburn is incapable of fielding a good defense because the offense doesn't allow it. Score quick? Defense is always on the field. Everything goes wrong and opponent wins TOP? Players are tired. Auburn needs to can Malzahn and get a McElwain type coach that doesn't try to play cutesy every freaking play.

That's dumb. It's not the offense.
We are cursed in defense

Alabama ran more plays than Auburn last year. That is a not a valid excuse. There are other teams that run HUNH that field decent defenses.

They have a glorified OC as head coach that doesn't know or understand how to coach defense. Last year after the Iron Bowl Gustav was blaming the offense for the loss when they scored 44 points. He didn't even mention the defense in the post game presser. It was the offense did t score TDs in the redbone. He doesn't know anything about defense to the point that he can't even talk about like a SEC head coach so he just sticks to offense.

Gus began his coaching career as a DC

Good thing he changed sides of the ball because his defenses are straight dog shite breaux.

It's not the offense. Clemson had the #1 defense last year and Chad Morris got his offense from Gus Malzahn.

It's not the offense, it's the head coach. Defense is not his priority. It's that simple.
Nothing will change at AU until Gus strongly emphasizes defense. He'll have to do a little more than just hiring an unemployed Muschamp. If he does, then watch out. If he doesn't, he'll be the head coach at Arky State.

For one season, 24 years ago, at a high school in Arkansas that is so small that it no longer has football.

Why is this always the defense of Malzahn? Clemson dialed it way back in 2014. They were not nearly the same offense as they were in 2013. Dabo and Morris knew they could to play to a strength on defense, helping along youth at QB. Malzahn has regressed massively since 2013.

This is the truth. Their TOP jumped into the mid 30's last year after hovering between 83-112 under Morris.

Because Malzahn is rigid in what he wants to do dont really care about defense.

Clemson offense was the same as 2013 in a few games, including UNC and NC State, when Watson became the starter. Clem was going to destroy G Tech too but then Watson got hurt, and Stoudt shoulder was hurt all season. We scored a lot on SC when Watson played.
Stoudt then had 4 TDS against Oklohoma and 300 plus yards passing. that was after Morris had left the program. Stoudt's best game ever was 1st game post MOrris. lol
Morris never ran a Malzahn type offense, it was always more pass based than run based.
any major program that makes Morris a head coach is going to be disappointed.
