Only two acceptable reason for Spurrier to Quit...

…during the middle of the season. If he is taking the USC job, which I doubt, or if he or a family member has a serious illness, which I hope is not the case.
Anything less than one of the two above mentioned reasons and he is just a fricking quitter. To quit mid season on your team without a serious reason will blemish his career in my opinion.

Silly OP.
He might have been asked to retire immediately by the AD and athletic foundation for the good of the program. It makes good recruiting sense to have a permanent coach in place.

He's earned the right to do what he wants, but why not just announce you're retiring at the end of the season and finish up these last 6 games. It just seems out of character for him to not finish the season.

Well there are way more reasons
He woke up Sunday and didn't have any desire to go back. That is when you should make a life change, when you have no desire to wake up the next morning
Or, perhaps there is some sort of violation coming to South Carolina?
I am not saying either of these is the reason but those are at least 2 more

Well it fricks up SC recruiting thats for sure. I saw where one commit has already bailed.

Who cares if he quits? Not like him staying makes the program any better.

This. If he isn't going to be there next year the only value of him sticking around is for his own slow roll into retirement party. Spurrier obviously doesn't want that. By leaving now USC can start focusing on who will replace him. Also, if Spurrier doesn't feel like his coaching is working he is doing the right thing by stepping aside.

Im just of the opinion that if he started the year he should have finished it. I have always thought he was a fricking crybaby and this really makes he look like a POS in my eyes.

I agree. He should have finished out the year unless one of the two reasons listed is actually true. Quitting mid-season basically says, "Hey, guys I give up on our year...sorry". He might be trying to avoid a complete losing season (only has one other one in his career)

I'd say its better than this happening at the end of the year and recruits jumping ship a week before NSD.

It's also out of character for a program he is in charge of to slip back like we are currently experiencing.
Spurrier is just out of energy. He would have to make serious changes to get us back on track. For the overall good of the program, he had to retire.

I actually agree. Play the season out unless there's some personal issues to tend to. His post game interview said it all. He just sounded beat and done with football and next thing you know he is. Very surprising mid season.

This definitely happens irrespective of when he quits.
